Hmm I'm sitting around, bored, and got an idea.

The polished steelfish thread got me thinking.

How cool would a PVD'd steelfish be? I know a lot of Pam nuts PVD some models (a couple listed on risti and TZ right now).

Anyone ever heard of this being done? I've almost convinced myself in giving it a try. A polished fish would be neat, but just like my other polished lings. A PVD'd fish? That would be original and pretty cool.

I think it would be real slick. Maybe just the gold parts though

From a longevity standpoint I think I'd prefer DLC over PVD.

I looked into a DLC bracelet for my Blacksteel and it isn't feasible for bracelets, but it's definitely a different look.

It might look cool to start off with, but surface coatings of any type concern me. If they get damaged they look rubbish and there is nothing you can do to fully repair it other than recoating it, which is not always possible.

Sounds cool, I'm sure it would look cool, BUT

What are you going to do when it is time for service? Breitling either won't touch the watch or will make you pay to put in to its original form, if possible.

To me, it looks like a win-lose situation

Here's what I meant...

DLC - Don't know why I said PVD.

I was thinking a black dial fish DLC'd on black rubber.

Service - I was going to look for the biggest beater I could find on TZ.

For the service, I'd have to leave it to my local watchsmith.

PVD and DLC? You guys heard of FCVA Tetrahedral Amorphous Carbon (ta-C)? It is tougher then DLC, it has up to 88% sp3 bonds (diamond bonds) so have hardness of up to 75GPa.

Currently used industrially for cutting tools, forming punches, plastic injection etc...

Sounds like you have a plan then. I'm afraid in 20 years or so though, it will be worthless. Your local watchmaker might not have access to parts anymore and Breitling will smile at the watch if they get it.

I think you should get a nice hobby -- like stamp collecting --
that might help alleviate these spells of madness you're obviously
prone to.

Why don't you just drop your Steelfish into a gallon of black
paint -- that would be cool too  Leave your poor Fish alone! Have you
forgotten what it was created for? It's a rugged, fundamental diver's
watch; it doesn't need absurd embellishments.

Forgive me for getting emotional. It's just that every time I look at my
own Steelfish and imagine doing something ridiculous to it, I cringe.
But it's your watch, you can do what you want. But if you do make
that change, promise you won't wear it out of the house. The poor
watch would die of shame.
