Post subject:  Breitling Emergency purchased but facing shipping issues...

Good morning guys,

I had recently posted a thread on possibly purchasing a second hand Emergency. Well I have done the deal and paid the seller who is based in the US. However, the seller has just come back to me by email and said he cannot find a shipping company that will send it to Hong Kong or so to say - outisde the USA due to the watch containing a transmitter and it is illegal!? Is this an issue others have come across and any help or advise on how I can overcome this?

Many Thanks!

I would check that with your Civil Aviation Authority in HK. Does not sound right as these watches fly in and out of destinations all round the world, every day. So are pilots who wear this watch technically in breach of a transmitter rule when they touch down in HK!

What do other pilots in HK, who own an Emergency, do? Is it a watch not seen in HK because of an illigal transmitter? Can you buy an Emergency in HK from Breitling AD's? Makes no sense.

Seems to me that if there is some sort of security issue with the transmitter, then HK is lagging well behind the rest of the world, if they let this get in the way of free movement of material and equipment across boarders. If its an interferance issue, then this would apply everywhere else in the world.

No, it makes no sense, but what would I know. Perhaps there are issues with shipping to HK from the USA and this seems like a good excuse.

Either way, this won't get your watch delievered.

Assuming you cna have the watch in HK, can you have the watch sent to a friend somewhere else in the world who may be coming to visit you in the near future? Or can you pick it up on your route!

I suspect that the issue has nothing to do with HK regulations and everything to do with arbitrary shipping company rules.

OP, try contacting shipping companies directly to see whether they will ship - you can always arrange for them to pick up from the vendor.

Well, strictly speaking the Emergency is a radio transmitting device.
Importation of radio transmitting devices into Hong Kong is not illegal but controlled.
It is controlled by OFTA, the telecoms regulatory body in HK and requires an import license which is issued by OFTA.

I would also check with US authorities as I suspect you my also face a similar issues there hence why the couriers don't want to accept the shipment.
Getting the permit from OFTA at HK end should not be a problem.

Thanks guys.

Just to update, I had to watch shipped to a family member in Florida so it is there now. Thinking if it might be a better idea to have it serviced etc in the US and then picking it up. : )

The service centre in Hong Kong located at Shun Tak Centre is quit good so I would be tempted to get it serviced there seeing that you are located in HK.
