Post subject:  Affects of temperature on accuracy?

I purchased a Superocean 44 a little over a month ago. When new it was averaging about +4 per day. Recently weather's been cool (low 60s during the day and low 40s at night). I wear my watch about 13 hours a day. Lately I've been leaving my watch on the window sill with the window open so when I pick up the watch in the morning its stone cold. I wear a sweatshirt all day so its underneath my cuff when I wear the watch.

I've been checking my watch against the atomic clock for the past week and now its running about +0.5 to +.75 per day average when I check it in the morning. Do you guys think its due to the watch just breaking or is it the cold temperature having a profound affect on my movement (thicker viscosity of the oil etc)?

How has the temperature affected your accuracy? Summertime?

Temperature is one of many factors that can affect accuracy (though more temperature variations), so can position and any one of a thousand different factors. The watch is also still settling so I certainly wouldn't be concerned and trying to establish a single cause of a variation is unlikely to result in an accurate assessment.

Hi ingdowlover,

I think the problem might be thermal in nature. If it’s a problem in the first place that is. Your getting down very low overnight temperatures by the sounds of it. As the watch is near an open window I think I would move it, if possible, and recheck the accuracy.

All materials expand and contract according to temperature, that’s just physics. If all expanded at the same rate relative to each other, then all would be fine. But as they don’t then the issue is manifold and becomes relevant to the individual circumstances which are hard to judge. Watches are usually designed with a calculated variation in mind, which includes the angle the watch is worn at (wrist) as opposed to lying flat overnight, etc. Extremes of temperature is factored in as is humidity and air pressure. Thats why COSC standards subject watches to so many tests for certifcation. Oil and other lubricants can also have an effect, but not that you would probably notice.

I would put the watch away at night in a warmer part of the room, or in a drawer, etc to try and keep the watch at a more ambient room temperature. The fact you are getting a wide variation when checked against an atomic clock would suggest the inaccuracy is subject to more than just an issue with the watch mechanism. If that was the logical conclusion you might have been drawing. If the movement was at fault, I would expect to see a consisatnt (more or less) varation in accuracy. Sounds crazy, but thats been my experince with movement faults as opposed to environmental considerations.

Regards

Jim

Thank you for your replies. A friend of mine purchased a used PO with the 2500D movement and its running about +1 second per day, so I'm actually happy that it's now running +0.5 to +0.75 second per day. I will go back to leaving it elsewhere where its room temperature and see if it maintains this current level of accuracy. If it does maintain then I won't have to resort to leaving my watch in the fridge during the summertime to slow down the watch lol.
