Hi. Breitling newb here! just got my new superocean 42 and loving it. the bsw has been greatly helpful so far thanks!

I bought the watch online and the watch's date and time aren't set yet. I haven't fiddled with the crown yet afraid I might mess it up.. I read the manual and understand the thing about counter-clockwise winding and setting the date etc... but I'm not sure how you can find out if the watch is on the right 'month'. That is to say, since its december how do I know if the date will reset to 1 after 31 or after 30? even if it does reset to 1 after 31, how do I know if the 'internal' calendar is on october and not december? obviously february is the problem i guess..

Anyways,, I'm excited to get my first breitling and am eagerly waiting your input

Congrats on the new watch.

The movement in the SO42 doesn't "know" what month it is, so you will always need to adjust the date at the end of any month that doesn't have 31 days. The vast majority of mechanical watch movements are like that. Only semi-perpetual and perpetual calendar mechanical movements keep track of the month (and year in the case of perpetual calendars) and automatically adjust for the different dates, but those will cost a hell of a lot more than the SO42.

So as for the winding the crown 40 times, how regularly do I have to do this or it is necessary at all?

If you wear the watch each day then you won't need to wind the watch at all (or very rarely) - it's automatic/self-winding, which means it automatically self-winds itself when it's worn (assuming you are reasonably active - i.e. not confined to bed).
