i checked in google it says breitling emergency operate on 121.5 & 243 Mhz for millitary personnel
whats the difference between these 2
and how Millitary personnel get the 243 Mhz as its not listed anywhere to be available online

The 243 MHz piece was from when the piece was first issued and it was never sold to the public, only to military units. The 121.5 version was exactly the same except for the frequency. There is also supposedly a 406 MHz version coming within the next year or so.

any idea if they will make the 406MHz available to the public ?

Wouldn't the new emergency require a 121.5MHz homing transmitter the same as non-GPS PLB's, in addition to the 406 Sat signal? Narrowing my location down to 20 square kilometers is not going to do me any good if I crash my motorcycle down a remote embankment.

have there been any pics leaked of what the new emergency might look like?? I have never been too big on the Breitling SQ but I would make an exception for this piece, granted its not the size of a dinner plate.

No clue on what the technology will be in the new one, and no pictures yet - not even a solid release timeframe.

Breitling is only stating, that they are definitely working on an "Emergency II" (no official name of the watch yet available). They have not yet published any additional information except mentioning the 406MHz Frequency. Of course, every year before Basel, there are rumors, but nothing of any substance. The main problem in the development of the new model: Dassault, the technical partner for the first Emergency has left the project, so Breitling has to do everything by themself or find an other partner.

No, 121.5 MHz is still widely used and will continue to be monitored.

The issue is that COSPAS-SARSAT no longer process 121.5 beacon signals, so you'll never get picked up unless there is an aircraft or ground station monitoring 'guard' and can determine your beacon signal from the watch.

My PLB I carry when flying over water has a 121.5 beacon for short-range homing only, and the 406MHz 'distress' signal now used by C-S is quite a complex data burst which can include GPS location data and does carry a UID which ties the beacon directly to me. I struggle to believe that Breitling will (be able to) fit a 406MHz beacon into a watch, but perhaps miniaturisation has moved on such that it is now possible, as a 121 or 243 beacon is really such a simple transmitter when just used as a beacon compared to what is needed for a 406 beacon.

True enough, but......

the Emergency signal is not strong enough for satellite reception anyway so satellite monitoring is irrelevant.

My main source for that information is talking to people, working for the company or to my agent. I meet my agent at least once a month, and he is always happy to share news.

You missed out the work 'reliable' ... It certainly could be received by the sats, but only when well within the expected range of other types of beacon, and it couldn't therefore reliably triangulate you rough position.

Ok for 'man overboard' type use or as a backup to a SARBE (on 243MHz) but pretty useless on 121.5 especially with all the damned CAT pilots chatting about baseball scores or the weather on 'guard' nowadays - and then the self-appointed 'guard police' yelling "get off guard" at them
