Post subject:  Warranty expiry & sales of pre-owned models
While there are many watches for sale on the site that are nearly new, or 1 year old, generally speaking, is there a correlation between the expiry of the (pre-2012) two-year warranty and the number of models posted for sale? E.g. this year, more watches introduced in 2010 were offered for sale?

Personally, I don't think warranty expiration is a big issue for most sellers of watches. For the most part, good Swiss watches run trouble free for several years. However, a different concern arises at 5 years to 7 years of age. That is a typical interval for the first major service of a mechanical watch.

I dont quite get what youre getting at, but sometimes people will sell a watch if the warranty is about to expire as some type of peace of mind sine the buyer knows that they can send it in if there is something wrong with it. I had a watch that I dont wear that just ran out of waranty 2 months ago, and I contemplated selling it before it ran out to gain some value...but it turns out that im pretty lazy so I never got around to it. But generally, I dont think it really has much to do with a sale. It might add a bit of value, but I think its just more a matter of it might or might not have a warranty when a seller decides to sell it.

I'm with Scott, more likely to see pieces sold as the service becomes due (or overdue) than at 2 years because that's a known cost that a lot of buyers don't seem to factor in whereas the warranty expiry is simply an increase in risk and the attitude of many will be that if it hasn't gone wrong in 2 years it will be fine.

I typically buy pre-owned watches and my only Breitling was purchased pre-owned from an AD with no manufacturer warranty. Most dealers will include a warranty of their own for some period. This means nothing to me as I'd rather pay to send the watch to BUSA for repairs, servicing, overhaul then allow a secondary watchmaker/repairman do the work (personal preference). The discount on the used watch will typically offset at least one major overhaul or repair. As a buyer, the original warranty is more of a nice to have, although i always want the stamped warranty booklet.

As for a watch that is 4+ years old, the overhaul to me is a much bigger deal. To me it affects the price/value of the watch by approximately $500.00, so you'll have to figure that out and include it in negotiation when making the choice between new and preowned.

For me personally, warranty status has never been an issue when I've bought pre-owned. And as a seller, I don't recall that it's ever been a determining factor in making a sale. The major service every 5 - 7 years is a much bigger deal.
