I am looking at a BREITLING WINDRINDER CHRONOMAT AUTOMATIC -
Yachting Edition watch that was manufactured in the mid 80s to mid 90s. Its water resistance is listed as 100m. Can this watch really get wet? For example, if the wearer falls overboard. Can you swim in it? Also, does the age affect its water resistance.

Also, I would appreciate any opinions on this model.

I wouldn't go diving but it should be fine for a brief dunking and swimming.

As far as the age having a bearing it is true that the seals will deteriorate over time and I think that Breitling recommend a check every 1 or 2 years and the seals being replaced regularly. The life of the seals will vary depending on use as well - the harder the life or more frequent the immersion the more frequently they should be replaced.

Don't know much about that model or range but someone will help more I'm sure.

As long as the crown screws down and there are no cracks in
the crystal, the watch should be able to handle shallow immersions.
But if the watch is vintage '80s or early '90s, it really should have the seals
checked and probably replaced. It would help if you knew
the watch's service history. That would tell you a lot.

Breitling recommend that you have the water resistance tested every 2 or 3 years, especially if you use the watch in water a lot, so I'd definitely agree with having a WR test first before using it in water.

I would def have it tested out before a quick dip in the water also just to be sure that the water doesnt get in....you never know these days.... good luck
