I wish that there were more people like you - less competition for me. I've picked up some amazing bargains without B&P and as I've never worn the box it doesn't bother me at all. That said, I don't sell so resale value is irrelevant to me.

It's honestly more of an OCD-type thing. I'm not formally diagnosed with OCD, but when buying an expensive watch (or any item), I prefer to have it be complete, as I originally implied. Not only does it help verify authenticity, but it also makes me happy, as a collector. :geek:

Only bezel is gold, price is probably about right.

For those of us who prefer the older models, it is a good buy.

Never said that it wasn't, I just said that the price was about right for the model, grey market, etc.

A lot of the Omega watches also on ebay lately have no boxes or paperwork usually the seller will say lost in a house move.
Like above ideally I like to buy complete but if from a good source and lower enough in price I will buy without.
Personally I dont understand how someone can loose or not be intrested in the box and paperwork on a expensive purchase.

Another reason for no box or papers is probably to do with the credit crisis.
There is a lot of pawn shops now which people with expensive items including watches are using and probably dont always pawn the complete package so when they fail to collect the watch gets sold as is.

I threw away my box when I bought the Colt because I was unaware that it affected the value. I still have the instruction booklet but it was pre-COSC so not much else in the box that I recall. This was pre-internet days so not something I could have researched.

We're not all crooks.

I don't think anyone is implying that all watches without boxes and paperwork were at some point stolen or acquired illegally. For me it is just about the warm and fuzzy of having all of the numbers match...and even then it is not a sure thing. Look at how many complete sets of paperwork are being sold on ebay with no watch, then all you need is a fake watch and access to an engraver or laser etch machine and viola....a "certified" breitling.

I purchased my one Breitling as a used watch being sold by an Authorized Dealer. This AD also sold used watches on ebay. After all of the horror stories I read about online regarding fakes, I decided to call these guys before finalizing my online bid and within minutes of speaking with them I was completely put at ease. While there is always the possibility of being ripped off on a second hand watch, there are measures you can take to stack the deck in your favor...and having the complete set of paperwork is just one of them.

I think a lot of people probably also like to sell the box and papers separately.

I can only guess that the average watch buyer just sees the boxes/papers as so much detritus. As WIS, we're incline to place value on the whole package while the public at large probably doesn't see it that way.

:yeahthat

First hand experience about 2 months ago I was in Vegas for work. With a couple buddies and one decided to buy a new watch. We went from the Venetian to Caesars and visited about 10 dealers/boutiques...he ended up buying a IWC Spitfire. Anyway...he wore the watch out put paperwork and receipt in his back pocket and put the box in the trash about 100 steps away...I doubt the paperwork made it home from the hotel.

He will beat that for a couple years and then wash, rinse, repeat...it's a different breed than anyone of us participating on a "forum" about watches that's for sure!

I bought my first Breitling from an AD 15 yrs ago during a trip to the States while living abroad. I tossed the box and papers (except the warranty card) in the hotel trash can. But when I called my wife that night, she told me to bring them home, so I retrieved them from the trash and put them in my luggage. They sat on my shelf for years before I finally moved them to somewhere less obvious. Only when I got the bug to buy a second watch last year did I realize the value of a box and set of papers. I suspect a lot of first-time buyers had a similar response to the box and papers.

well, if the price difference is less than 20%, I will probably go with AD to get complete set; if more than that, i wouldn't mind, as far as it is authenticated.

Good Breitling people,

I am currently on the lookout for something really special, a solid gold or platinum 'Ling. With the prices of new models bordering on the preposterous, I am of course drawn to the used market.

However I am amazed how many of these are on offer without the original box and papers. Why would someone not have them? The box, especially in the case of the precious metal models, is absolutely awesome; usually solid wood. How can this become lost? If I'd spent many thousands of pounds on a solid gold or platinum item, I would most certainly keep the box. The papers as well as really important; of course an older watch will be out of any warranty period, but the papers are important as it shows when the watch was serviced by Breitling. Indeed for the watches I have, I still have the papers and boxes.

With specialist cars such as Ferraris a documented service history is a pre-requisite to the car holding its' value; a Ferrari for example without any service history would be far cheaper than one with full service history. I think as well it shows how cared for the watch was, if it has the papers; afterall if these become lost, surely that indicates in some way the owner is a bit careless. It just suprises me a bit!
