Post subject:  Selling my SuperOcean to a friend

So I went to my dealer today with a friend who is considering getting his younger brother a Breitling as a best man gift (nice gift!). I am also considering getting another watch so as I was browsing my friend suggested that maybe he buy my SuperOcean (two years ago model. 42mm with the blue inlay) and I use the money to put towards a new SuperOcean Heritage.

I like the idea, but can anyone help with the details? What's a fair price? Is there a quality way to get the watch cleaned up or "refurbished" so it looks like new? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Do a search on cape cod or sunshine cloths for many, many threads on polishing that will help you out. Pricing advice in the FAQs is to check sold prices on eBay and dealer asking prices on Chrono24.

Thanks. Will do.

Any idea on a ball park price for the watch. I mean, I'm selling it to a friend and I'm not looking to kill him, but I'd like to get fair market value.

It doesn't get a lot of wear and is in great shape plus I will get it cleaned up nice for him.

Thanks.

Price depends on a lot of factors, so it's hard to nail it down. A very general rule of thumb, subject to a lot of variables, is 50% of current retail. A lot of times you'll see pre-owned dealers asking for more, but that's either because they expect the buyer to negotiate the price down, because they feel their reputations as established dealers warrant a higher price than going with an unknown seller, or because they've polished the watch up (or serviced it) to make it in better condition than the average, or all of the above.

If its going to be a gift, id recommend a professional polishing. Find a reputable place near you and have them do the job. It will probably cost $100 or so, but I think its worth it if its going to be a gift. Im assuming it could use a good polish, by the way.

Hey appraise my watch, no picture, no model #, who knows if it even has a nice strap, but I'm selling it to my buddy and it needs to be cleaned. What's this the blind version of the price is right?

Previous model Superocean. Barring any major alterations or damage, a ballpark number isnt too tough. Bracelet or strap makes a difference though.

Cool. Thanks. I know it's not possible to get an exact #. Half retail seems reasonable after I get it professionally polished for him....then it's off to my AD to use that cash towards an upgrade.

Tman, you're crossing over into troll territory. It would be nice if you stifled yourself.

Sorry jackie, if the truth makes you feel that way about me, my apologies...... I'll be on my way now so you don't hurt my feelings anymore... I'll appreciate people like you and Roff for taking time to answer every silly question that a simple google search and 3 brain cells can answer. Shouldn't this be in the help section anyway?

Sold the SO 42 to my friend for $1750 including a blue ocean racer with deployment and the bracelet.

Immediately spent that money and got an SO Heritage.

Thanks for the advice.
