Further to my previous thread here:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39043

I have chosen the version shown here:

http://www.breitling.com/en/models/aven ... /index.php

I have struck a deal that has got me the watch for £3,200.00. The retail price in the UK is currently £4,160 for this version which makes a discount of £960.00. I feel that I have done well with this and would urge other people to just get the best deal they can cut.

That's about 23% off, which is nothing to scoff about. You've done well
Grasshopper. In USA $ that roughly = $4600-23% = $3542. May your
new watch be an omen of great things to follow.

As actual prices have been mentioned, I suggest you communicate the AD name via PM, guys.

I actually don't think that anyone should have much difficulty getting this percentage off a Breitling, or most other high end watches from ANY dealer. The key as I have said in another post is having the confidence to talk to more than one dealer. Dealers want to sell these watches and as long as you negotiate in a way that doesn't come over as arrogant or rude, I think that anybody can get the same amount off.

my first attempt to negotiate a discount with my local AD resulted in a big fat no, so i've had to go less local to the tune of 200 miles!

I think if that is the attitude then just walk away. It's their loss and it isn't as if they have exclusivity and you have nowhere else to go. There is also the fact that a dealer who behaves like that is most likely shooting themselves in the foot, especially if it is an independent dealer because at this price point and with a brand like this, they should realise that if they look after you, you're most likely to come back and get another watch in the future from them. Remember that with these kind of brands you are also buying into a lifestyle, and the way the brand makes you feel. Watch makers like Breitling take years ensuring this is part of their appeal to the consumer who can a) afford it, and b) see beyond a watch simply being something that tells you the time. This in turn tends to build brand loyalty and ongoing sales to the same person over time. Otherwise why would you spend so much on one of their watches? Yes, of course the watches are excellent in terms of quality and aesthetics, but that isn't their only appeal for most people.

If you have the ready cash then you are obviously in a stronger position to get a good deal, but even if you are looking to get credit I still think you can get ten to fifteen percent off the retail cost. And you can still negotiate with the big name chains such as Beaverbrooks, Ernest Jones, Goldsmiths, etc. If you do get a knock back don't let it deter you, just go elsewhere. Just keep in mind that you work hard to earn your money, so the dealer should have to do the same when seeking business from you.

With all the talk about Breitling cracking down on discounting I hope they realize their products are overpriced if not for the 20-25%+ discount. If they think they can compete with the higher end watches that actually can command minimal discount then they are in for a big surprise.

Agreed for us in the Western Market. But I fear the focus is on the Asian market where they not only outsell the hell out of the rest of the world, but perhaps at little to no discount.

Absolutely true - never was any discounting in Japan, it's just not given or expected in that market and sales are still pretty good there. Within markets the absolute cost is less relevant than the relative cost (against other brands and other items).

I got 25% off on the last two brand new Breitling purchases in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
I was immediately offered 30% off on the Chronospace Jet Team LE a month ago in HK when I asked how much.
Last I heard, Hong Kong and Taiwan were in Asia.

Hence why Sharkman said (and emphasised) perhaps. As I pointed out above, Japan (also in Asia unless they moved it) has a culture of paying list price.

Exactly why I phrased it as I did. I know for a fact Asia has the lion's share of the market now. What I don't know for a fact is pricing. My point, as I said this week on a related thread, is the Western World just is not as important to Switzerland as it once was, which makes it easier to put the screws to us.

One of the reasons I've never even bothered to wander into an AD here in Japan. I'm pretty sure if I even asked what discount they could give I'd get a confused look. The Japanese will over-pay for anything and everything without the blink of an eye.
