For me, is without a doubt the Chronomat GMT. I absolutely adore the case design, Breitling’s well-known quality in the Windrider range, not so under finished as an Oris as to actually be visibly low end nor is it too finely finished as say an AP as to driver the price way up, though I do think the watch is overpriced (it should be 2K less) as in its price range it competes with Jaeger Le Coultre and Glashutte Original sport models, but it does have that exceptional Breitling crystal, their excellent bracelet and strap range and unequalled AR that does score some points against those brands. The fact that it has an in house movement and is 47MM only drives up the desirability.

It is so close to being a fantastic timepiece yet royally blotches it with two major details. I still cant get used to that f^&*ing space font, the old chronomat font was perfect for a high end sport watch, what the hell?? but I would live with that, its that damn square in the middle of the dial that REALLY annoys the hell out of me, as if the dial was so simple it needed another level of attraction, geez! And the fact that it is actually a different texture and shade than the rest of the dial really drives it through. And whats with the diverted indices effect on the square? Seriousely can you get more gimmicky? I suppose the company that came up with the Galactic range can.

Its such a shame as the hard work related to creating a great watch is there, just leave out the square, keep the old font, and use the same old romans, that would be an AMAZING watch and I would buy it in an instant, even if overpriced. When I bought my RG Transocean I compared to other watches in its price range and it did not compete well with any of them especially with JLC and GO which Breitling seem to be targeting with their new prices but I still got it because I have a soft spot for Breitling from my first watch days, I want to like the new designs but just can’t, it seems to be targeted at a completely different segment.

I have seen a few pics of the watch taken at an angle so that the square is not so visible and it looks GREAT, even with the space font. I know if I get the watch I will hate it because I will focus on that damn square and the splashing indices thing, but I can’t take it off my mind due to the other aspects, and I love Breitlings dial color shades, especially their blue and grey. I am thinking of just buying the damn thing and then losing a bit on the resale just to get it out of my system.

Sorry about the rant! If you own the watch and like it then you should consider yourself fortunate, these are simply aesthetic objections based on my personal preferences.

 A rare rant from you there Altair - but an enjoyable read all the same!

I totally agree about being overpriced, but personally the biggest problem with the Chronomat GMT is the size. 47mm is just waaaaaay too big for a Windrider model. That kind of size works on the SA, because it's meant to be brash ; it's meant to be a statement, but the Chronomat is supposed to be subtle. Additionally, yes the Buckified font is still a polariser, but the dial square doesn't personally bother me. The size is the killer AFAIC.

The Chronomat GMT 44 is a different animal again, but that one suffers from being a bit too ho-hum IMO. Nothing about it screams out "buy me"!

I'm very much like you in terms of really wanting to like the new Breitling models, but nothing in the new range is spot-on for me. I really like the Navi 01 but after trying it a few times, it really is too small for my liking. Same goes for the TOC. The FF is the best of the Chronomat 01's IMO, but while I'd warmed to the Buck font quite a bit, I still don't love it, and considering the price of Breitlings these days I'm gonna have to absolutely love everything about a watch to drop the cash on one.

There are still a few dialmakers, who could produce a custom dial for You. Just keep the original, in case for selling the watch...

Intentional, or not, Breitling has created a settle, rather than select mentality for
potential buyers, new & old. The inflated prices remind me of the Omega shake-
down that began circa 2006. Yanking auths from trusted, long term dealers,
jacking up prices, opening boutiques to monopolize their products & market
shares. Breitling & many others are doing the same, realizing they must pander
to wealthy people, because everyone else is financialy doomed, & not apt to
purchase classy watches. (These are my perceptions, & do not reflect watch
trends, or any one else's thinking.) I DO NOT like the way things are heading, but it's
unstoppable. Some have reacted by stealing, such as a major Rolex robbery on
LI last summer, & in other states/countries. These examples are indicative of why
vintage markets are more popular, but again, the high end auctions are closed to
us commoners. We must simply suck up reality. I apologize for the negativity, but
I see these events happening not just with watches, but with homes, cars, clothes, etc.

Bingo. That stupid @$$ square ruins the entire watch for me. I can live with the brushed finished on the new 44mm GMT bezel but that square ruins it. Here's the 44, great looking watch, but the square detracts from its beauty. And the greenish pearl is another feature that I can't look past! I want this watch but I hate the square, this was one model that I was excited about, not any longer.

I like the square, really sets it apart from other brands.

I also like the bezel font. Bold, sporty, unique. Another feature that sets it apart from the crowd.

Buy it Brother. Before long you will fall deep, deep into it's charming gaze, and all the old bezels with their geriatric font will slip into your next for sale thread...

I fall into the "hate the new bezel font" camp. I tend to develop brand loyalty and would love to get another Breitling but at the moment I'm not sure what's in their lineup that I would buy. If they made a new, 43ish mm version of the 1940s 765 with black dial, I'd snap that up in a heartbeat. Until then, I keep looking at the new Zenith Pilot Big Date.

If they would ditch the square, fill in the GMT hand with lume, and make a non-chrono model, I would be all over it. It's just too much going on for me. I do like the fact they brought it down to 44mm though.

Just lose the square and change the font and then it's a homerun! They won't do either; they kept that stupid bullseye design on the evo for its entire life, but it didn't dominate the dial nearly as much as the square does.

That square, and the extra $ stopped me from purchasing the BO1 originally

Ive always liked the square. It adds a nice dimension to the dial. I like the way i cuts into the hour markers, and how the 9 and 3 totalizers line up perfectly with it. The font though, not so much.

Call me crazy, but I actually liked the bullseye.

Personally, I didn't mind the square or the font. I wasn't a huge fan of the indices morphing around the square, but what I could not get used to was the size. Although I love the SA, I could not get used to a Chronomat in that size. It is a gorgeous piece, and I'm sure some love it. But I decided to return mine and order the 44mm GMT. I prefer a brushed, GMT bezel as well. :D
