My lady friend (who also happens to work in the same junior high) just told me that purchasing a super avenger would be a bad idea because "it would be too much for a school teacher." I guess she thinks that I shouldn't wear it because somehow it would be too flashy, too pricey, or maybe both to be wearing in the halls each day. She's wrong, right? |

Huh, very WRONG! You earn your money and you spend it on what you want. Maybe it's a nice car, nice clothes or you can blow it on booze and fags. Or maybe you can buy a nice watch and wear it with pride as an example to the students as to what you can achieve by hard work and sensible financial management. It's your money, spend it on what makes you happy. |

agree. My dad is a retired teacher and sports a Chronomat O1. Just because you aren't a brain surgeon or sports agent doesn't mean you can't have a nice watch! |

posting.php?mode=reply&f=1&t=38900# Well said zak ....... i agree ..... wear it in the halls with pride. The only jobs where I would say a Breitling would be inappropriate to wear at are some type of construction worker or police officer or somewhere where it could easily get damaged. |

I wouldn't worry about it, like others have said, you earn your money so don't be afraid to treat yourself. |

I highly doubt any student will know what it is. |

I'd bet many of the kids who wear watches these days wear ones that are much more over the top than a SA. So that would make your watch look like just a watch.... to the few that would even care. I'd bet an Ipad would draw more attention. |

It is your money, and ultimately it's up to you what you want to spend it on, and how you want to "display" it. In some cases, though, it makes sense to be a bit circumspect. Ironically, in the legal profession - where it's assumed lawyers are well paid - it's often advised that lawyers do not display wealth, because they don't want their clients to think they're too well paid. I know a lot of lawyers who drive their Toyotas to the courthouse and leave their Porsches at home. On the same note, I can see where your lady friend is coming from. Public schools often cry poor and continually say they need more money to maintain basic standards for their students. How does it look, then, if parents or students see a teacher sporting a luxury timepiece on his wrist? Of course that doesn't necessarily mean you're overpaid; people get money in all different types of ways. It's just a matter of the message you want to send, and the type of scrutiny (and maybe attitudes) you want to endure by wearing such a watch. And of all the watches you could choose, the SA is certainly one of the most eye catching. |

Well, you could be a mindless conformist like your co-worker or be an individual. Do they still teach Thoreau in Schools? |

I'm a Christian minister and i have to be pretty careful. People can assume that i'm greedy or worldly. Thankfully watches are much less noticeable than a car (altho with an SA its a toss up!) and i usually explain that i buy my watches second hand and save for them very slowly. At the risk of copping a pounding, i actually do think there's an ethical dilemma with spending as much money as we do on watches. So many of the world's people live in utter poverty and we could use that money to alleviate their suffering. It's not that buying watches is wrong (far from it!), but i think each of us needs to figure out for ourselves how we enjoy the good things we've got without becoming cold hearted and self absorbed. Just my 2 cents. |
