i went to set the time on my steelfish and the entire stem and guts pulled completley out. i put them back in and everything still worked.....i could adjust the time and even wind it. now what? time for a service?

It's caused by a loose screw in the movement that's easy for a watchmaker to get at, so not automatically a service, but if the watch is 5 years or so old then a service isn't a bad idea.

Yeah, been there. done that - RECENTLY! It a simple set screw adjustment any watch repairer can handle. I took mine to the AD's B certified guy and got it back a week later - $40.

Not common, just not unheard of. The fix is common (simple).
