I’ve been experimenting with ways to protect the clasps on our bracelets from the dreaded swirling and scuffing that happens while we’re desk surfing. This latest idea may actually work.

I took some of the material we use to protect the leading edges of our wings, gear leg fairings and wheel pants from bugs hitting them at a couple hundred knots and cut it to fit each piece of the clasp. It’s clear, somewhat pliable and about twice as thick as regular packing tape. The shine is still bright and it’s almost undetectable from more than a meter away.

I cut three pieces here and if you look closely you can see the edge of the material just inside the edge of the clasp. Sorry for the dust nib above the “G” on the bottom piece. I’ll have to remake that piece.

You can read about the material here: http://solutions.3m.com/3MContentRetrievalAPI/BlobServlet?lmd=1201819600000&locale=en_EU&assetType=MMM_Image&assetId=1180595010456&blobAttribute=ImageFile

I’ll update everyone on how it wears. So far so good!

I think that is the exact same material that ZAGG uses in their invisible shield protectors for electronic devices (and some watches)

Yeah, it's 3M protective film, used in all sorts of applications - laptop screens, cellphones, tablets, cars, aviation, etc.

They actually make pre-cut pieces (different diameters) for watch crystals (to protect the cheap ones ?). I've actually used the 3M clear protective film on my Ocean Racer deployant clasp.

Gee, I wonder where ZAGG gets their product :) .

OMG I think you just RUINED it for me! :uplaugh:

I'll give it a few more days and see if I can get over the mental picture of my grandparents 30 year old plastic wrapped couch that still looked new.

If any of you want to try some of this stuff I have a 100 foot roll which is enough for about 10,000 watches. PM me and I'll give you the address of my hangar. You can mail me a self addressed, stamped envelope and I'll mail you back a strip big enough to try it yourself a few times.
