I'm considering my next Breitling, I want something more day to day than my B01 on croc and am locked on either the 42 or 44mm Superocean. I will also use it for scuba diving. I see that the movement is the same (Is the #17 movement by ETA?) and aside from the size and the color trim differences, are there any other differences that stand out? I am comfortable with the size of the B01 but also comfortably wear a vintage Submariner, which is like 39 or 40mm.

They are effectively the same except the size and dials. They have the Breitling Caliber 17 movement which is a heavily modified ETA 2824-2. For scuba, neither has a bezel pearl but I assume you use a dive computer anyway.

The 44mm may be easier to read under water. I have noticed the 2mm difference can be substantial when it comes to certain dials.

I prefer the 42. The numbers look the same at any angle. If you go for a silver inner ring, it contrasts well with the black hashes. Yellow may also work well. Plus, it looks damn nice too. :)

The SO44 is avaiable in either brushed or polished finishes.

I've been told the polished versions of the SO44 are still around 4-6 weeks away from arriving at my AD. I have the brushed version sitting on my desk right now and I kind of like it.

The numbering on the 44 dial is asymmetrical, only having a 6 and a 9, whereas on the 42, the numbering is more evenly balanced. That said, the 44 compensates with more and better-balanced lume; lume markers on the 42 dial are only at 12, 6 and 9. As Sharky mentioned, neither watch has lume on the bezel, so it's questionable how helpful the bezel will be under diving conditions. A number of people have raised the point that it's silly to have a dive watch without bezel lume, but I don't know how many of those people are actually divers. (I'm certainly not.) Since you are, you're in a better position to make that call, per your own needs.

I'll withhold comment on said fugliness; I assume since you've narrowed down your decision to these two models, you like their looks.

breitling rep told me the polished isn't coming, but he's been wrong before.

i loved the brushed, can't say i like the polished though.

the brushed is an awesome dive watch, lots don't like the rubber, but i think its as nice as a sub for half the money!

deep sea> so44>sub, thats how i rank em, ceramic sub maybe not, but the old tired 50 year old sub just doesn't do it for me.

but its just my opinion, they are like a$$ holes, everyone has one, and most of them stink

I was thinking specifically of the ceramic Sub when I said that.
