Post subject:  Used v new and new non ad watches
Im being told that if I buy a new breitling online from a non ad the warranty is void and breitling will not even work on it if I send it in. Any truth to this. Also was told from the ad that if I buy a used watch it needs to come from a buyer who has a "stamp or seal" on the receipt or else breitling will not warranty or fix it. All this came from an ad in cols Ohio.

Any truth to this? I want peace of mind and to be able to have it serviced but I also like a deal.

I asked about this not long ago, here. My understanding is that purchase from an AD is required for the warranty to be effective. Breitling will work on a watch it produced, but if there's no warranty, you'll be charged, just like after a warranty runs out.

No idea what this "stamp or seal" business is, it sounds like FUDmongery. Folks buy and sell used watches all the time, and send them for factory-authorized service.

You may want to compare prices with some of the ADs on this forum with the online non-ADs, if you're looking at new stuff.

The vast majority of grey market dealers will not provide you with the warranty certificate to protect their sources. They will offer their own warranty instead, but as they can't access Breitling parts that's really only worth it if it allows for exchange - otherwise assume no warranty.

Breitling will still service the watch (at your cost) as long as the serial number is intact. Until a few years ago grey market sellers routinely removed serial numbers but it's less common now.

As indicated above, you can get close to or the same as grey market pricing from a friendly AD and still have a factory warranty.

Glad this was posted today. I am looking at buying a watch on eBay, which is stressful itself, but since it comes with all of the paperwork, what does that do for me? Can I get it all registered through Breitling in my name? What is the advantage for having the paperwork if the warranty is invalid?

I got really lucky with my watch then. My first "nice" watch was my Motors T. My wife bought it for me for Christmas about 3 years ago on-line, thus gray market. It came with the boxes and all the paperwork including a stamped warranty booklet. It was purchased by the gray market dealer about 3 months before I bought it so I was left with about 21 months of Breitling Warranty. The site advertised 2 years warranty through their own company and didn't mention the Breitling warranty but as far as I was concerned, the Breitling warranty was valid because I had the AD stamped warranty booklet.

If the watch is still within the warranty period, it is transferable so you get what's left. It also suggests that the owner cares about the watch since he kept all the packaging/papers.

Other than the Emergency, you don't need to (can't?) register a pre-owned watch with Breitling.

Whether within warranty or not, paperwork which matches the serial on the watch is the surest sign that the watch is genuine. Also helps re-sale value.

Awesome Sharkmouth, thanks for the info. Say I was to buy a watch without he paperwork. When I send it in to Breitling for work, can they reissue paperwork for it, simply to have documentation that would prove its authenticity should I ever sell it?

Some of it.

You can get a manual from them and can order a replacement COSC certificate, but the warranty can never be replaced.
