Post subject:  Think I'm done with polished watches!!
I guess it's my OCD, but I can't keep my SA as clean or shinny as I would like. No matter what I do i see swearl makes and tiny tiny scratches. I use the cape cod cloths and watch cleaner,nothing works to my standards. So I think I'm done with polished watches, anyone else feel that way? Lol

let me tell you about a little secret I happened on about 20 years ago . Here's the story I was having issues keeping the crystal on one of my watches clean and I thought why don't I try the treated cloth you get with glasses with coated lenses (the cloth has sort of a weird feel ) the ones I use are made by Micro Clair . It did a great job cleaning the crystal so I thought I would use it in the watch it's self, Was I impressed it made my watch just shine . This will not remove scratches . But it will make Breitlings look awsome .

Yep, I'm the same way, in a way (?) I've stated here many times that I don't do polished bracelets because they just scratch up and begin to look crummy in a short time (and too blingy for me). I thought I could get by with just polished case, hence purchase of Panerai. But I got tired of how easily these cases marked up and attracted scratches (I usually baby my watches). So, I just decided no more polishes surfaces if I can help it. So now any new additions will probably have brushed/satin finish cases with leather or rubber straps.

That's a good idea, but he'd also need to get the case brushed to match.

Fingerprints and the like annoy me, but keeping the watch clean isn't difficult. Small scratches just come with the territory, and I can live with them. To reassure myself that the watch looks OK, I check out how it looks in the bathroom mirror when I'm wearing it. From that distance, it looks as good as new. If keeping the watch clean and even buffing out the scratches with a Cape Cod cloth still leaves you unsatisfied, then yeah, it sounds like you've got very (some might say impossibly) high standards. To be happy with your watches, you'll either have to learn to accept imperfection, or steer clear of polished steel watches. Ever consider tungsten carbide?

its normal man. just enjoy the watch. as long as there are no major dings youre good to go. i hate the scratches too but it something you learn to live with.

I'm in agreement with Jacksonstone and Boogiebot on this one Koz,

When I had my first 'Ling which was a blue faced B1, I used to buff it up (with a soft cloth) to a nice shine every morning when I put it on. This went on for a few years. Then, when I exchanged the B1 for the Airwolf I thought one morning that I would just see how my watch would look if I didn't buff it so often (I felt that I was actually making more swirly scratches by buffing it like that - dust scratches and when trapped on a cleaning cloth it can play havoc). So, I stopped and just made sure that there were no finger marks on the crystal. Every now and then I would wash the watch in warm soapy water, rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Do you know what? The world didn't end and the watch looked great :D .

Now, a couple of weeks ago I did give in and gave it a clean with a Cape Cod cloth (it was starting to look a little 'tired') and it has come up fantastic again. That being said, I am not going to start buffing it every day again because it really did look very nice without the constant buffing and just occasional wash - I am absolutely sure it looked better for longer.

Koz, there is my story. It's a watch after all being said and done - just enjoy it for what it is :lingsrock:

Good lord, guys. They make a pill for that OCD stuff.

Just do what I do - always wear latex gloves. And not the ones with powder on them because then you will have shiny sh#t with powder on it and that understandably will drive anyone crazy. I also recommend surgical masks to avoid sneeze marks on your polished Lings; which serves a dual purpose along with the latex gloves to avoid all those germ things. Finally try showering with Comet cleanser and a Scotchbrite pad. Soon your polished Ling issues will be a thing of the past.

The twitching is probably from breathing all those Brasso fumes over the years. Bad for they synapses, you know.

I stopped caring about scratches a few months after I got my first polished watches. I can honestly say that they dont bother me one bit any more.

I have a Chronomat GT from 1999 that is highly polished, I like it; the quality of the polish is quite fantastic. Yes it does get scratches on it, but it will do; I like to wear it! Even today it still looks stunning; and I wear it pretty much every day.

It has been serviced and the watch was brough back to an 'as new' look.

At the same time I got the Chrono my brother got a Rolex Datejust, Rolex don't really polish their watches like Breitling and to be honest it doesn't look as nice; at the end of the day the Breitling just looks more finished off having the polish. When you see the effort that goes into polishing you begin to think why the Rolex is so much higher priced...

I really like the polish look on my Evo - the perfection and precision in the bracelet links is just beautiful. The clasp tends to take the brunt of the abuse from me, so Cape Cod has to rescue the look periodically,

had one of mine in for service recently, and they wanted ot polish it up for me reallll nice. I told them to not bother, as I preferred the look of it. you bought it for a reason, you liked the style, and also as a statement in one form or another. enjoy it man, and dont sweat the small things. They are menat to be worn and enjoyed, not sit in a pristine environment never getting used.
