Post subject:  Tips for using Cape Cod cloths?
Just received my cape cod in the post, and going to attempt to polish the super avenger bezel to a mirror finish.

Any advice on how to get the best results from a cape cod cloth?

Watched a few videos on youtube, and most people wear gloves. Is the chemical harmful to skin?

Also, once polished, what is the best way to wash the bezel?

Most definitely wear latex disposible gloves! You will likely need a wood piece with a narrow flat edge to work the tight areas - for instance where the polished rider tab sits on the bezel. See here - http://www.ofrei.com/page633.html You can fold the cloth around the stick, getting more leverage in tight places.


Either remove the bezel, recommended, or carefully tape off the crystal. If you slip and the crystal is unprotected, you will wish you never started. :oops:

I've never worn gloves myself. I don't think it's harmful (I hope!), but it does make your hands smell of vanilla, and it's quite slimy to wash off your hands. Hmmmmm, all of a sudden I realise why people wear gloves after all! :lol:

I also suggest going easy at first. Light pressure. Doesn't take much to get out light swirls, etc. Remember! You're removing metal by polishing...start slow and then use clean cloth to see where your at...repeat as necessary. These work great, good luck!

True but he is removing the brushed finish on the bezel. That will take some effort, time, and require him to remove quite a bit of metal.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Spent about 45 mins on the bezel this evening.
Would have been better with a dremel tool, but still reasonably happy with the finish so far.
Definitely prefer it like this as opposed to it being in brushed/polished contrast.

Still needs another going over I think, and as Sharkman says, I need to wrap the cloth around something pointy to get to the areas around the rider tabs, and the tab with the lume on.

But fingers are a bit sore from all that hard rubbing, so will do it another time.

Just a quick question, I've buffed out the polish, but is it advisable to give the bezel a quick wash with soap and warm water?

nice work! I would wash the bezel in hot water and soap to get the caustic fluids off. Not sure it will do any harm to the metal, but anyway it stinks .

Wouldn't it be a lot easier if you just removed the rider tabs? Guarantees the same finish all over the bezel.
Should be easy.

Not that easy - they don't come off on the SA!
