Hi,
Have been looking at the new ish aerospace and i was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the whole super quarts Vs mechanical idea. What you prefer etc?

There are a number of previous discussions about this here already. Personally I much prefer mechanical movements over quartz, to me a quartz watch is little more than one of the functions you get from a cell phone and I can't fathom paying preimum prices for one. SuperQuartz is good technology, but personally the whole thermo compenasted quartz seems to solve a problem that doesn't exist - it's not like a $10 Chinese quartz watch is particularly inaccurate.

That said, some people love the accuracy of the SQ movements, and for many people the look and feel of the overall watch is far more important that what's inside.

I completely agree with Roff on this.

As I've said on here before, I've dabbled with "high-end" quartz a few times in the past (all sold now), but what's inside a watch is of almost equal importance to me as what the outside looks like. As a result that means I will only ever now pay big bucks for mechanical watches (and in-house mechanicals at that).

That said, quartz does have a place in my collection, but it's in a couple of Casio G-Shocks, that are (IMO) priced appropriately.

Personally, I prefer automatic/mechanicial to quartz, but I also think the Aerospace as a specific model has a lot going for it - functionality, slim profile, ultra light weight, etc. - such that it's one of the few, if only, luxury quartz models I would actually consider getting. (Disclaimer: the quartz models I already own were ones I bought before getting more serious about watches. They're perfectly fine in and of themselves, but not something I would get again if given the choice.)

I like the Aerospace for it's looks, functions, lightweight, etc. It's nice to have a quartz piece in your collection so you can pick it and go without worrying about setting the time, date. I don't like the price of a new one but finding a decent used piece would do just as well IMO. With that said, the price of the new mechanical models are not so attractive either.

It's apples and oranges, I know, but compared to the price of most new Breitling automatics, a new Aerospace is a bargain.

Yeah, I agree. I guess the point I was trying to make to the OP - nothing wrong with a nice looking quartz piece. I like mechanicals (I don't require in-house movements), but the most comfortable piece I own is a titanium quartz speedmaster X-33.

If you like the looks and it feels good on your wrist, go for it!

They have different function. I love and I am fascinated with mechanical watches. But I need a SQ watch for work. Why? Very simple.

I use to fly many different time zones, so I needed a watch that I could change time easily. Needed alarm clock that would work whether I was in an hotel or a tent!. NVG compatible lighting for night ops, or just night light. Digital reading is easier in cockpit that hands. Circular slide rule (airwolf), yes I use it. UTC timing is a must. SQ gets you accuracy of 1 sec/month. Hacking my watch everyday to the Naval Observatory Nuclear Time Clock is tedious for missions, so yeah, it's great to have a SQ watch.

So an Aerospace will give you most of what I use. But it will never be a mechanical watch. The mechanical watch will be something that you can use forever (I'm wearing my dad's solid gold mechanical watch which he got 48 years ago), but I cannot use it for work... it's just missing too much.

So my Aerospace is now delegated to spousal unit. I use my Airwolf for work. And I am patiently waiting for my TO Chrono LE to stare at for the next 50 years.

Well I like my Chronospace it looks good is very accurate and the important thing is its my choice for my wrist :D :D

Let say to me is it a service issue
A mechanical watch is defiantly worth the service cost
Regardless the quartz movement complexity it's not worth the cost breitling charge
In my opinion the change from normal Q movement to superquartz is way to pricy
It will get badwill in the end

The work load to service a mechanical watch is way more than a quartz
But the price difference is not that big

Then when my kids get my watches in the end
A mechanical watch can get new parts made and the quarts don't
As the electronics machine that make the parts for the quartz is obsolid

Look at the early quartz line from breitling they can't get new parts
