My girlfriend likes watches, but she's not as obsessed as I am. She pays attention to the watches I wear and can generally notice a good watch from a cheap one.

I thought I'd show her my Navitimer B01 Limited and see what her thoughts were on it, so I did. Her first reaction was "it's very nice, but it's identical to this other one you already had" pointing at the Bentley GT. Quickly I replied "What are you talking about! they are completely different" - "Where's the difference? they look identical" she said.

So I followed up with a lengthy explanation about the new in-house movement versus the old ETA movement, although I didn't go on about it for too long as she was giving me a blank look, like when I try to speak to her in Spanish - so that wasn't working obviously.

Then I tried to explain that both watches are intended for very different tasks, and went on about the slide rule bezel markings and the conversions possible with each of them. She was getting bored again so I thought I'd try something a bit less "geeky"

I explained that one was an LE and the other one wasn't. I showed her the numbered case and explained it's 2000 pieces world wide. That seemed to spark some interest! So she concluded "so this one is a limited edition and this one is not, fair enough".

:? I surrender.

Anyway, I think it comes down to genuine interest in watches and the craft behind them. For some people, I think watches are simply a fashionable item and don't think about them beyond the dial and the case.

That's funny... My wife said the same thing when I was buying the navitimer 01 LE. In my case it was the Motors T. I did admit that they both had black dials. Lol.

Love it!

Next time when your mrs asks which shoes she should wear, say "but they look the same, black!"
Then duck

This is funny.

I got the blank look from my girlfriend when trying to explain the difference between a machanical movement and a quartz.

Try to say that in the long run mechanical is cheaper, don't have to buy batteries

I think some of you are missing a trick here.......

If she thinks they all look the same, bring on the sneaky purchase, she'll never know

I'm lucky I guess, but my wife likes my choice of watches. Maybe some of the celebs she takes a shine to that also wear Lings have something to do with it, maybe she's just being supportive, but either way she says she's glad I chose them. Her equally expensive tastes in art deco antiques and exotic holidays, and the spooky way in which these appear not long after a watch purchase has nothing to do with this discussion of course......a rather rosy tinted attitude of mine that may be tested soon when I start murmuring 'Mmmm...Transocean Chrono' in my sleep. Its been a few years since my last Ling, and I've only bought a few pairs of shoes and a few shirts during that time. I've been very good...but once again, I feel the force.
Besides, I'm the boss....
