Aren't you glad that Bentley automobiles aren't shipped in pretty boxes like their horological Breitling counterparts?! It makes me wonder how much of a premium the original packaging and paperwork that come with our prized watches should be placed on them when we go to buy or sell a previously loved piece.

How much more are you willing to pay for a watch without the original boxes and documentation compared to the exact same watch with only the previous owner's say-so as to its heritage?

And with the same reasoning, how much would you deduct from the price of a watch you are selling if you didn't have the box and docs?

It makes you think about how you safeguard both the watches and their precious packaging. It's probably not much of a problem with the collection of 2 or 3, but what do the rest of you do with your larger collections of bulky boxes?

Just wondering...

In my mind... No box/certification, no sale. That's JMO though. I like the whole package.

I'm just the opposite. As long as I know the watch is 100% legit I couldn't care less about anything else. (on the assumption I was keeping for good) I think I actually threw away a hang tag or two and was very surprised to see the things actually are considered collectible and have value. To me they're just a piece of junk plastic... but of course now that I know better I kept it for my Bentley just in case I ever do sell. Otherwise I wouldn't care.

Personally I like to have all the "goodies" the watch originally came with. Plus I think it reassures people of their authenticity.

I have never sold a watch that I didn't buy specifically to sell so it's almost irrelevant to me. If I am satisfied that the watch and seller are real then I welcome the opportunity to save some money.

The goodies are nice. But they spend their time in the attic closet. If I know the seller and the history of the piece, I'll buy it without papers or box and enjoy the savings.

You can source boxes pretty easily and the paperwork can be replaced(except for the warranty).

I'll correct that one.

I'd love t have the box, but it isn't a must. Papers however are a deal breaker for me. No papers, no deal.

i will never ever buy a breitling without papers or boxes...

It is so special for me to save a long time for a nice breitling and then recieve and open it with no one around and enjoy the moment that the papers and boxes should be there! It is not the same feeling for me if i only received a watch without papers and boxes.

OK.... aside from raymond and others like him, allow me to highlight these 2 points:


Would you put a 5% premium on a purchase or sale with/without accoutrements? 10%, 20%? It would likely be less when the piece falls into vintage status, of course, but I'm referring mainly to watches newer than say, 2000.

Hello

I dont mind as long as i know where it has come from. I like the savings. It is nice if they have box and papers but it is not a must. I think that if you are buying a watch the company like breitling,rolex should put some effort into the box to make it look good if you are buying an exspensive watch.

I don't care about the box. Papers are another story. My preference would be to have at least papers. If not and I'm convinced the watch is 100% authentic and legitimate, then I don't mind saving money.
