I was in Miami last weekend and while there, I stopped by Tourneau to look at some watches. White browsing at their pre-owned display, I saw a Gray and Silver Skyracer both with stainless bezel and bracelet and really love it. Both were absolutely stunning but was shocked when told by the sales lady they are priced at $4700.00??? :wowzers :wowzers She also told me that the watch retails for more than $5600.00 brand new. Both came with all the boxes and papers but still ... :wowzers

This has been discussed before and the general consensus was the SR is a bit over-priced. On the other hand it has a 38 jewel movment with a couple nice complications - the center minute totalizer and a combined minute/hour sub dial. Plus IM(Biased)O it is a beautiful watch. My take is the SR represents a small bump in sophistication from the watch most folks compare it's price to - the Avenger. Of course, Breitling stomped all over that by putting red, orange, green, and brown bezels on it. Now it's a watch designed for well-heeled circus clowns.

(Don't pay any mind to Tourneau prices! Go somehwere else.)

Why does it cost what it does?

Cause it's seriously cool!

Or at least, as Shark says, it was until they covered it in rubber....

Because you were at tourneau. I was at one and they told me that a used 45mm PO was $3k. Without B&P's. I actually laughed out loud when they told me that.

BTW, for those interested, sticker price on a Skyracer Raven in Australia when converted into USD is around $7,500USD...

Other big brands (Rolex for example) work out to be similarly much more costly here given the current strong AUD relative to other currencies, especially the USD.

So spare a thought for us down under!

I was sceptical when I was originally made aware of the SkyRacer and it's price tag. However, I was recently converted when I was loaned one for a review.

I hope I can convert you somewhat by asking you to follow the link below:

The Tourneau pre-owned model is odd. They get their used stock from trade-ins on new purchases. Here is where it gets dodgy. They will give you top trade-in value on your trade. But you MUST pay full retail for the new piece your are paying for in whole or in part with the trade. They are quite aggressive about suggesting their trade-in program. The piece traded in then goes to Tourneau's pre-owned stock with a high and not readily negotiable price. And Tourneau disposes of boxes and papers, making their pre-owned prices even more ridiculous.

I would much rather trade in for mid or even low pre-owned value and get the normal discount on the new peice. You always come out way ahead.

Nice review. I couldn't agree more. I'd add one thing - despite it's 16mm height, it has a rather flat and shallow case back for a Breitling which allows it to sit firmly on the wrist. Those of us with smaller wrists especially appreciate that "non-flop" feature, as well as the many others you discussed.

I think the skyracer has the coolest non-in-house movement that Breitling make. Id have loved to see it on more models.

Saw that red bezel version the other day and it looks just as bad in person as it does in the pics.

I couldn't agree more! I have been searching for a "Like New" Super Avenger for some time and thought I would pop into a Tourneau and check new prices since I was at South Cost Plaza already. They had the model I was looking for and I told them about my search. I asked what their price was and he looked at the tag and said "$5490." I said, "Yeah, I know what retail is, but what is the best price I can get?" Stone faced he replied, "That's it." I also laughed out as I left!
