Ok, I have a chronomat evo. Recently I have been reading a lot of citicism of Breitling and their watches. Mainly, "they are too flashy", "they are pimp watches", "too big", "the only reason you buy one is to show off how rich you are and rub peoples noses in it", etc. I hate this 'jersey shore' type interpretation of Breitling and hate the idea of being associated with it
Maybe I'm too sensitive but this really bothers me and has even made me think about selling my chronomat. I don't want to send out any of those messages. I'm definitely not wealthy or flashy or obnoxious. I've stopped wearing my pilot bracelet because of fear of being too flashy (well and partly because I like the leather strap I have). I'm not sure where I'm going with this ...rant over

Opinions?

Buy/wear the watch you like - it's your time.

My question is whether you have heard remarks, criticisms or complaints about your Breitling? I recognize statements are made in the popular media, but the evo is not as much an "in your face" watch as several others. I get nothing but positive comments about my stainless white 43mm Navitimer on bracelet. Now if you have gold or diamonds on it, I think the last couple of years have soured people on that, but that's not just Breitling. And I come to this discussion as one who can't bring myself to get a two-tone blue dial Sub. Someone in my office has a stainless Evo with black dial, silver subregisters on bracelet, that is completely classy and doesn't look overwhelming on his wrist. Nobody has a bad word to say about it. Size relative to wrist matters, too. If the watch is large for the wrist and Breitling makes a lot of models in the 46-49 mm range, that makes them perhaps a bigger target. Breitling is also a target because it is a nice watch, but I don't think a stigma applies to every Breitling. I see no reason, unless you are getting comments about your watch, to change a thing.

Thanks for replies!

Just re-read my post above; I hope its not too abrasive! I wrote it as a train of thought and didn't edit it at all so I hope nobody is offended by how forthright it is...

Also, I'm not saying I agree with these criticisms- I'm just after opinions.

I've heard/read similar remarks/criticism myself, but ultimately I don't care what other people think. I buy my watches for me, and me alone, if me people have issues with them, then it's their problem not mine.

Now as it happens I've started to find the Bentley models a bit too OTT for me, and the SA a little too large these days to be practical, especially under a shirt sleeve........ but it has nothing to do with other people's opinion of them. (Hell, if I cared what other people think I wouldn't absolutely love the Omega Ploprof, as it's probably the most polarising watch around these days!)

At the end of the day it's your money and your wrist, so buy and wear the things you like.

If you come across that way, it doesnt matter which brand of watch you wear. What about the old guy with his chest hair hanging out of his shirt with no socks and wearing a Rolex. Or the poser high school graduate with a Tag Heuer.

These are popular brands so they are bound to attract a lot of different people. We just tend to focus on the negatives. Wear what you like and leave it at that. If youre not "that guy," you wont come across like him.

I cant blame you though, since I want a Rollie but have my own reservations about it.

The SA IS too big to wear under a dress shirt. It gets caught-up and stuck on the watch - LOL...

Cheers for responses!

I really do love my watch! I know there are always nay sayers for everything because everyone has an opinion! but I suppose it bothers me that I never seem to read derogatory Rolex, Omega etc. threads

Regardless of the watch brand there will be some people that like it and others that won't. No matter how expensive or cheap it is. "Rich" people will look down at people with cheap watches and "poor" people will think people with expensive watches are rich show offs. Perception is a strange thing. On all the watch forums there ill be people who love a certain brand and others that hate it. Live is like that.

Sorry for laughin' but your post reminds me of how silly I can get about my own watch selection for the day. The FACT is 99% of people have NO IDEA what is on your wrist and of those 99% about 90% couldn't give a rip and pay your watch no mind whatsoever.

We watch fanatics are a miniscule part of the picture.

(and of the 1% who pay attention to what wathes people are wearing, likely 3/4s have never seen Jersey Shore)

I think the issue does not just apply to watches. Those that can afford a fancier car, a larger diamond ring, a high end house are going to also face the same comments. C'est la vie. Rich people can afford expensive itmes. Some of us are not rich, but save up for our excesses. I for one fall in then later category and I will be damned if I am going to let anything I read or other peoples comments detract from my enjoyment of Breitlings. All in all I get just positive comments. People that know me know that I am not flaunting or pretending to be wealthy. The only comments I get occasionally is wonderment that anyone would pay that much for a wristwatch. They obviously don't understand our passion.

ENJOY your watch.

Umm, I bought a watch with bits of the Titanic in it - wanna talk about people getting a hate on???

As others have said, it's your watch, wear it for you and if people judge you based on the watch you wear that says more about them than about you. If I cared what people said about me then I wouldn't have half the watches I do.......

Or be a moderator on here
