I have a good friend and fellow watch nut that wants to trade his Chronomat for my Carrera chronograph. He has box and papers and i do not (bought mine gently second hand - like new). Delimma, his breitling needs a service. Breitling quoted $500 usd when he sent the watch in several weeks ago. He is upset with Breitling because he had the watch serviced by them 26 months ago.
So, in a nutshell I would be trading a working Carrera for a broken black-face Breitling. Thoughts?

Breitling will not warranty it. $500 usd repair/ service is what they quoted.

personally i would trade for the chronomat. i like the overall design of the chronomat much more. would your friend be willing to pay a portion of the service? or the fact that its box and papers and your is not is what he has on you.

If its just a service [presume that is a complete overhaul]for that price, what makes it a broken Breitling. And if it was serviced 26 months ago it shouldnt need another so soon. With a complete overhaul it would be like a new watch I would jump at it.

I would do it too. Ask him to cover part of the overhaul cost ($100-$200) just as good will since he's the one asking for the trade and you can pay the rest . Once you get your Breitling back from overhaul you'll have a brand new "classic" Breitling for a cost of a few hundred bucks and a new addition to your collections

:yeahthat to all the above. Especially if the Chronomat is on a pilot bracelet. Besides, for a full chrono service Breitling will fully restore the exterior to like new and you will have new hands with new lume, etc... And you will have a like new Chronomat with a full 1 year BUSA warranty. Plus the missing Tag box/papers is about a $3-$400 deduction anyway if he ever wants to sell it online.

Bare in mind that Mint Evos(I'm assuming it is a Chronomat Evo) generally sell used between $2,800 and $3,300 based on condition and whether under warranty. I haven't a clue what a Carrera on strap sells for used.

i would make the trade, then have the watch fixed by a breitling authorized watchmaker for probably 3 hundred bucks

I would do it without reservation. As Shark said, once you send this back for a full service you will have a wonderful watch with a full year warranty from Breitling. It's worth the $500 for the service IMO.

Make the trade. Much better and nicer watch, plus all the B's and P's..... I'd do it without hesitation.

Thanks for the replies. I spoke with him yesterday and as soon as Breitling returns the watch we will proceed with the trade. From what I remember it does have the pilot bracelet. I am just going to trade even with him. I only have 1K usd in the Carrera (including a new strap). Used (no papers or box) I might get $1500 - $1700 for the Carrera on eBay.

Forgot to mention; he really wants my Carrera because he has the exact same watch except black on SS bracelet. He likes the possibilities of swapping straps/ bracelet. Pretty cool I thought.

He was using a hammer and shovel and forgot he had it on. Now it runs/ stops/ runs/ etc.

How old is this Chronomat?

It's kind of a lopsided trade in favor of you..
