On my way to work the other day I was treated to a very cool sight:
Two big-@ss, back-lit Navitimer ads side by side at the subway station. It's an in-doors station so it was too dark to get a proper pic with my mobile, but the ads were a long the lines of this one:

I was wearing my Navi 01 LE, so it was kind of cool to see Travolta's stern gaze and then think "Hey, take it easy. I'm wearing one." :)

I like John Travolta (met him once) but as an airline pilot everytime I see a Breitling ad stating Travolta is a professional pilot, it makes me laugh. Sure he's a pilot with a great fleet of aircraft, he likes to call himself a professional pilot and he likes to dress up in an airline Captain's uniform - but he's not a professional pilot.

Still, I wish I had his money and planes....

What is a professional pilot for you? Someone who really knows how to fly (meaning all kind of birds in any situation) or someone who gets paid for flying an aircraft from A to B?

And I'm not implying that Travolta is a professional pilot, mind you.

A professional pilot is someone who follows company procedures, sticks to personal limitations, and follows regulations even when it isn't "convenient."

With all due respect, Mr. Travolta does not fit all of the above (the FAA temporarily suspended his license a couple years back).

There is a difference between flying in a professional manner and being a professional pilot. Hopefully the secind is also the first.

A professional pilot flies as his primary occupation. It is his career, not his hobby. An actor who owns a plane and pilot uniform and likes to fly around in both is a professional actor, not a professional pilot. He might or might not also be an actor who flies in a professional manner.

Nobody said that he did. He's just prolonging his acting career into real life.

And to my knowledge, he's not employed by any airline or a similar company to follow any procedures. Except those of the FAA, of course.

I agree with your point. However, the Breitling marketing department labels him as a professional pilot. ;) But it's exactly that....marketing. And when you own and operate a Boeing 707...there are more than a few procedures to follow, employed by a company or not. The FAA's are a perfect example...as you said :)

Travolta is not a paid pilot for Qantas nor is he on their pilot senority list. He does advertising for Qantas. Although he got a pilot training course as part of the advertising deal he made with them, he is not qulaified on or allowed to fly their aircraft. His 707 paint scheme and his wearing a Qantas uniform are part of the advertising deal.

Travolta is not a paid pilot for Quantas nor is he on their pilot senority list. He does advertising for Quantas. Although he got a pilot training course as part of the advertising deal he made with them, he is not qulaified on or allowed to fly their aircraft. His 707 paint scheme and his wearing a Quantas uniform are part of the advertising deal.

Correct. Travolta was never a pilot for Qantas (and not Quantas because not many people know that Qantas are initials and stands for: Queensland And Northern Territories Aerial Services). It's all a PR thing including the c/s of his 707 in vintage Qantas colors. But the 707 was indeed first delivered to Qantas in 1964.
