Post subject: | Watch instruction manual - things it should say! |
Hi I've had my first breitling for a couple of weeks, and have realised that there are lots of things I've learnt on here that I wouldn't have known otherwise. And I'm someone who reads instruction books! The Breitling book is not very detailed considering how the watch needs to be treated and that it can unknowingly be damaged. I know most things are in the instruction book - but only once you know what you're looking at. Things I think they should say simply and clearly for new breitling watch owners are:- * with the winder in position 1, wind it 40 turns before wearing to fully wind it * do not ever fast-adjust the date between 8pm and 3am * and do not wind the hands backwards between those times too. * And if flying west, don't wind the hands backwards for time zone changes if the wind-back brings it into the 8pm-3am zone * WR of 100, 50 or 30m means don't swim with the watch as even 100m can have water penetrate through movement, and make sure the crown is screwed in first. It's not worth risking getting water into a 3k+ watch. * Don't polish the crystal with anything abrasive, even a polishing clioth, as the AR coating can come off * The watch will need servicing after 5 years or so, quite expensive, but essential and worth it, and don't let a non breitling dealer / repair shop near its insides. * if you put it on its side at night it will lose time compared to putting it on its back *it can lose or gain several seconds a day, which can be a real surprise if you've only had quartz watches before. * It takes a few weeks to settle down, but if you're like me you'll be monitoring its accuracy (mine gains just over a second a day). On the iPhone there's a good free app that gives atomic time called Time, by emerald and sequoia its a good one to have. All important and useful things that I think the average new owner won't know even if they do stare at the instruction book! Yes, they're there - but not really that clear unless you already know. What do you all think, anything I missed? Mart |

I think that a lot of those are in the instruction book and that some aren't really 'instructions', but maybe that's just me ![]() |
