Hi All - sure this pops up a lot but needing to do a valuation on my Breitling for insurance purposes. I've called Breitling up directly and they can do it so long as you send it to them. Issue with that is Royal Mail only cover £2,500 which wouldn't be enough. Other option would be to just take it to a dealer. As I'm in Aberdeen it'd be one of two dealers in town. I naturally want to get the best valuation price for my watch and figured Breitling would be the best.

What do all of you do? Any ideas?

Add it to your home policy is easiest

If you are insured for replacement value then a current list price should be sufficient.

That it what I keep telling them but they're insisting on a valuation. Something doesn't sound right with what they're wanting.

I had a simular problem here in the states when i bought a second had rolex they wanted it authenticated and priced, but since my breitlings were bought new they were content with a receipt for authentication and the MSRP for the price

The AD doesnt even evaluate the watch. They check which model is and then value it at current retail price. They probably already have some sort of form that they use for these requests. Just ask them.

Ahhh ok. That seems to make sense. Il head down to the local dealers and see what they say.

Thanks for the help all.

Your local AD should be able to get you appraisals on all your watches, and that should be enough for you to add them to your homeowners policy.

Right just came back from my local AD. What the lady was telling me was they look at the watch and reference the list price for the watch. As people are telling me, there are various types of valuations. One specific for insurance where theyre not actually valuing the individual item and other types that give you how much its worth if you're wanting to sell it. I obviously wanted the first of them. Not sure why they need to keep a hold of it for a week though, but guessing its because it has to sit in a queue of other watches. 27 quid to do it. Not too bad for piece of mind to be honest.

My insurance said the same thing that if I made a claim I would need a valuation dated within 3 years. I can't see why a jewellers charges so much to just write a letter with the list price on it

Maybe have a look at other insurers.

I recently renewed my home and contents.
Went with AXA in the end, covers me up to £7,500 on personal possessions including out of home and they don't require any sort of valuation on personal items unless it's more than £7.5k.

I've also head good things about M&S and Directline.
The majority of insurers I enquired about didn't require a valuation of my watch as long as it did not exceed £4k.

Whenever I buy a watch or jewelry, I ask for a letter stating the value of the item. Never been an issue and in fact, my AD has provided, free appraisals for other items I hadn't purchased there.
