I've been really wanting something with diamonds, but I'm just in the looking stage as I don't have the money to buy a new watch.

Just to cause myself grief, I stopped in at my local AD today (Macy's Jewel Gallery) and they told me that they have Breitlings on special pre-sale tomorrow at 20% off and an additional 20% off (after adding sales tax, 4.712% on Oahu) for opening a Macy's charge account. They have one Chronomat with MOP dial with diamond bezel and hour markers. Retail for the watch is $12,500 but after the dust settles, it would cost a little less than $8,400. That's even less than I could get the watch from some grey market dealers.

On one hand, I shouldn't even be spending $2,000 right now, nearly $9,000 is just stupid to be even thinking about. On the other hand, this would be from an AD, at less than I could get it for through the grey market, with all the benefits that come with buying from an AD. Also, Macy's only does this once a year at the most, and the promotion is limited to stock on hand, there's no guarantee that this exact watch will be available next time.

*Sigh*, I'm almost certain I won't buy the watch, but it's going to bug me for a long time.

At the risk of stating the obvious, you obviously shouldn't buy it if you can't afford it, but at least with diamonds you have a little more inherent value. None of us buy our watches for future profit, but with diamonds you aren't going to see the same reduction in value as with a 'regular' Breitling.

I guess the key test is what is the impact of not having that $8,000+ around.

Yeah, you're right. I mainly wrote to get it out of my system, 'cause I knew a lot of you would understand. There's no way I can justify spending that much on jewelry when the house needs paint, front gate needs to be fixed, etc. So, I will have to let this go and hope that I will be able to do it some time in the future.

In the meantime, I think I will look for a bracelet for my CA, that will make me happy, too. And that's something I can afford. :D
