Can you change the time on the watch if the actual time is not in this time frame, or is it determined by the time on the watch? What I mean by this is, say I throw my watch on a winder with the incorrect time and at 10 am I go to set the correct time. Now if the time on the watch is between 8 pm - 3 am I should not set the correct time, right?

It's OK to set the time no matter what time it is on the watch or actual time. You just can't wind the time backwards or use the quick set date function within the danger zone.

The 8pm to 3am rule has nothing to do with changing the "time". It relates to changing the date. During this time the watch mechanism starts the gear transfer to move the date to the next number. By manually changing the date during this time, you stand the chance of messing up the date change mechanism that has potentially already started the delicate process of doing it on its own.

Typically a person who lets their watch run down will do the following:

1) wind watch fully 40 turns of crown
2) advance time past 12:00 and see if the date changes to determin if the "time" is 12 midnight or 12 noon
3) set the time to correct time
4) IF the current time is before of after the danger zone, use the quickset function to set the date correctly. Othwise wait until the actual time is out of the danger zone to correct the date.

Hope this clears it up.

If I understand the question correctly.......

You can change the date and / or wind time backwards as long as the time indicated on the watch is not between 8pm and 3am, even if the 'real' time is in that timeframe. All that matters is the indicated time, the watch doesn't know what the 'real' time is.

You can ALWAYS wind the time forward, there is no danger zone and you can not do any harm to your watch doing that.

If past 12 the date changes you're in am zone. Based on that you'll see if you have to wind forward 27/29/30 days to get the right date or wait to be in the danger free zone for a quick date change.

Watches aren't like Gremlins - it's only the time that the watch is showing that's important, not the actual "real world" time.

Now, if you were to feed a Mogwai after midnight irrespective of what your watch is saying....well, then you're in big problems!

I don't think that is really what Biz meant - just whether you could change the time between 8 & 3, which of course you can - forward.

I don't think he meant this because Biz is an Iowa boy and one of my degrees is the result of 4 years partying....err....studying in Iowa. Right Biz? I am right? Right????

It wouldn't be the first (or second) time that the question was asked......

HAHAHA you are correct sharkman, and it's been less than a year since I was running around downtown IC.

Thanks for the responses guys, I though about this question later in the day thinking it was kind of a stupid question. I guess I should think before I post.

No such thing as stupid questions, just stupid answers - and yes, I count my answer in the stupid camp! Just couldn't resist though! :D

Does this rule apply to quartz watches as well? I've always just wound the time forward after a short month until the date ticks over to 1, but I am curious about this in general.
