I have never come across any info to support this but if someone has any please enlighten me. Is it good practice to, when first winding an auto watch that has run down, manually wind the watch with a steady even twist. I saw a video of a ETA caliber being wound and the weight was spinning. Seems the torque on the gearing would be best treated with some kind of care. Am I off base or would this be good practice? Thanks in advance. Best health, Frank |

It's a precision mechanism so you should always wind it carefully. I have experienced winding when the rotor spins, can't figure out why and it's not consistent, but that in itself isn't a problem. The keyless works that connect the crown to the mainspring barrel has a lot of parts where friction (and hence wear) can occur so keeping things as smooth as possible will reduce the 'shock'. |
