Post subject: | Letting your watch stop? |
So i bought another watch (Coral SO) and i just received it on thursday. Needless to say the new watch has been getting ALOT of wrist time since then. Naturally my steelfish has stayed in the box for most of this time. i noticed this morning that my steelfish had stopped - no surprise there. I reset the time and date and wound the watch back up. My question is, would letting your watch stop every so often and resetting it have any negative consequences on the movement? Basically im trying to decide if i should get a winder or not. Is this going to cause damage or will this just be a mild inconvenience? |

nope....there is no negative affects to letting it sit idle. a winder is not necessary, but optional. im sure one of the more educated members will jump in soon and give you the scientific explanation |

It's important to not let it sit idle for extended periods of time. Long story short, lubrication. |

My understanding is that over short periods it is no real harm but if the period runs into months the oils may not be dispersed evenly around the watch so its may be best to wind it once a week to keep things moving and oils circulated. So unless it is over extended period it is no harm only the inconvenience of winding and setting it when you need to ware it. like boogiebot says, lets wait to see what the big boys say!.. Well ware on your new acquisition! ![]() |

Lubrication isn't a problem unless it sits idle for extended periods - same argument as using the chronograph. Give it a full wind at least once a month and it will be fine. The biggest problem with letting hte watch stop is inadvertently winding time backwards or using the quickset date in the danger zone if that's where it stops. Simple answer is to just give it 30 winds every 24 hours. |

I've heard good things about the Brookstone winders, a single is about $100 and the double is $150 or so. I'm sure there are better ones and cheaper ones though, but not necessarily together. |

I'm sure there are better ones and cheaper ones though, but not necessarily together. I have two Brookstone 4-watch winders ($199). So far (about six months) they've been great. Very quiet and can be set to just about any TPD and direction setting you could ever need. Now, having said that, my Breitlings are on Orbita winders. The Brookstone watch holders are on the smaller side and don't do all that well with larger watches, especially those on bracelets (with a watch on a (non-deployant) strap, you can just put it on the winder a bit tighter). Some of the ones I have on them have a small piece of foam rubber tucked between the strap and holder cushion so it holds tight. LL |

With that kind of budget, you can get a very nice Wolf Designs 2.7 model with multiple heads and storage, let me know if you are interested via PM and I will get you a big discount off retail. |

I have a Rolex Submariner that was running about +1/day but for a variety of reasons, I didn't wear it for more than a year. It sat in my safe, unwound. When I finally fired her back up, she was running about +25/day which after a few days settled in at about +12. Service time. Never had this issue with any watch I've wound from time to time or kept on a winder. LL |

I have no problems with my Navitimer World on the Brookstone watch holders. Just put the watch on sideways. It is tight on the pad.![]() ![]() (Sorry for the bad pics. Taken quickly with my cellmphone.) |
