Post subject:  Buying Breitling without box / papers ?
I'd be interested in peoples opinions about buying a newish watch without papers.

As an example if a eBay seller is selling a watch and they have 1500+ sales on eBay with 99.5% feedback, BUT the watch has no box or papers, would you consider buying it if you can get it at say 30-40% cheaper than the normal market value?

The watch is approx 3 years old and costs about $6500 new, do you worry that someone who buys such a watch would always keep the box and papers?

The seller in this case is a ebay Watch/jewellery store.

Any opinions greatly appreciated.

I would need to put my hands on it, and need to make sure its real. I don't care if it has no box or papers, but it better be priced accordingly. If it's 6500 new it's worth 3 to 4 WITH box and papers, 2500 without. What b for b is 6500? New. They are all more than that I think.

i would never buy a breitling without box or papers...

when you receive a "new" breitling there is also a thing called; emotion!
the first seconds when you open the box and check the papers, that feeling is something that belongs to the hole project!

Me personally, I like everything to come with the package. Just make e feel a little better inside ya know? If the watch retails for 6500 New you should be able to walk into almost any AD and grab it for 4550. Take that into consideration.

PS. my whole thing with ebay is this... I don't mind bidding/buying if a) I can personally see it ahead of time or if they live near by. Or, b) despite the good reputation(even though that is important) he has references on forums like Breitlingsource.com. Ebay always concerns me, so I take all the precautions I can get.

Also, Ebay and Watches with no boxes....I bet there is a story behind that that he isn't telling you. Who gets rid of the box let alone the Paperwork of authenticity. When you buy a car do you throw away the title? I THINK NOT. And saving the extra 10% by buying off ebay would never ease my gut feeling of where the watch has been (JMO)

Not everyone that owns a nice watch cares about it as much as most of us on here do. I'm sure they just throw the boxes and paper away without thinking twice about it. If there was a deal good enough and the watch didn't have boxes and papers and I know it was authentic, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. The resale value will hurt if you ever decided to sell it, but you also should be getting a better price due to the lack of boxes and papers.

I personally would not buy without full box/parers. Now that being said if the watch was for sale from a TRUSTED seller, B.S. seller you dealt with before, ABD or some one you know that is selling etc, I would say, yes go for it. In any of those cases I would be happy to purchase without b/p but of course it would have to be at a very attractive price.
Like mrcheatle says I bet they is probably a story with most the eBay watches that are price very attractively.

I hope it works out for you and I would also say, as has been said many times here before, buy the seller as much as the watch.

We report fakes all the time from sellers with 100% positive feedback. Admittedly, in those cases, odds are good the buyers knew the watches were fake to begin with, given the low prices. I'm not intimating the watch in this case is fake. I'm just saying feedback alone isn't sufficient to guarantee either authenticity or that a genuine watch is in factory condition.

That aside, I'm with those who like to see papers. It's a personal preference. Even box and papers won't guarantee authenticity, but they are indicia of authenticity, and every little bit helps. Having said this, generally I won't buy off of eBay at all. I might make an exception if I know the seller, or could inspect the watch, but in my situation that scenario doesn't exist. So I don't go there. There are just too many risk factors when going that way. Plus, when you consider that a lot of good ADs will discount anyway, I just don't see how going through eBay gets you anywhere.

:yeahthat Very true, I bet there was a a lot of watch owners in the past few years that bought watches purely because they were expensive and probably thought of boxes/parers etc as unimportant.

In the last 10 years worldwide there were a lot of people with more money that sense...

Not any more though!

I enjoy the watch more if I get it with box and papers. It's pretty much the opposite with the glove. :wink:

For me, the whole package (box and papers) is part of the watch, so I personally wouldn't buy a watch without box and papers for my own collection, but if I was looking for something purely as a beater, I'd have no problem buying just a watch on it's own. If it's for an everyday beater that's just going to be worn to death, then as long as the watch is genuine (and it's priced accordingly for a watch with no papers), then who cares?

From looking at it I would say it's 99% real. Condition isn't great and it's missing a bezel rider. If you cap it out in the low 2k range you should be fine plan on spending a few hundred on a service and a rider.

For the right deal, I would go through the PITA of replacing the box set & paperwork with the correct pieces.

Lots of people don't treat expensive things as well as enthusiasts would like. Post the link in the replica forum and go at it for a deal if it's real... I would.
