Post subject:  Watchmakers Rank

Hey guys...

I know this is basically a breitling forum and i can expect there will be a plenty of bias towards the blings :D but what the hell...still i will pose my questions :D

How would the experts rank the watch manufacturers on the merits of quality, durability, precision and craftsmanship? If you would name your top 10 all time brands what will it be? Tough call I guess :D

waiting for the experts' opinion...enjoy

Hmmmm, very tough one to answer as there are so many variables to take into account - not least personal preference and bias! It's very difficult therefore to be totally objective as it depends on what matters to you the most. For example some people might say that in house movements are the most important thing. Others may say that brand image is the most important, etc, etc...

So with that in mind, from a purely subjective point of view my favourite brands are (in order) -

1. Breitling (funnily enough!!)
2. Panerai
3. IWC
4. Omega
5. Corum
6. Hublot
7. Vacheron Constantin
8. Patek Philippe
9. Rolex
10. Jaeger Le Coultre

This is based purely on which brands I would like to own from an aesthetic point of view, and not based on anything like exclusivity, price, etc. It is purely down to what I personally like, and what I would wear. I guess I'm lucky that some of the mega expensive ones (Vacheron, Patek, etc) are so far down the list!

Fair enough, and a solid list i must admit :D I really wish to see more posts on that to see how the watch enthusiasts feel about different brands.

For me and again on purely subjective basis my list is as follows:

01-Ulysse Nardin
02-Breitling
03-Panerai
04-Zenith
05-Baume and Mercier
06-Rolex
07-Patek Philippe
08-Omega
09-TAG Heuer
10-Longines

Come on everybody share your voice in this poll :D

I'd have to say that Hublot tops all other brands in terms of watchmakers merit and craftsmanship. They have a total of 3 watchmakers who produce all of their watch's by hand, and they are some of the most experienced watchmakers in the game.

I believe Oris probably creep into the top 10 as well, but that means that someone else is displaced.

And if we are looking at genuijne exponents of the art ... I vote Smiths.

This would be a tough for me to rank since I only own three pieces.

There are many fine pieces in the market place, but I would base it on number of pieces produced in a year with the fewest defects in workmanship.

There are millions of timepieces that are COSC certified, but as many of you know the nod goes to Rolex as the top Swiss watch producer with more than 700,000 pieces per year.

There are some other brands that would actually appeal to Ling guys like us. Roger Dubuis, Carl Bucherer Patravi Traveltech, Zenith Defy Extreme. The Patravi from Carl Bucherer is very much like a Ling and if we are talking about the looks and feel of watches these 3 manufacturers provide "Lingish" models.
