I was talking to a friend about how nice the sound is of an automatic watch. It's kind of old-fashioned in the quartz age, but comforting. I could tell he was admiring the sound when I let him hold my Avenger Skyland to his ear. This made me try to figure out how to record that specific movement's sound. The resulting audio didn't end up as "clean" as I hoped, and noise reduction software distorted it so bad I stopped trying that route. But this is what I ended up with:

(turn your volume up!)

That's a better recording than I would have guessed you'd have been able to get. I too like the sound of an automatic. Every now and again I find myself holding my wrist up to my ear, just so I can listen to what's on it.

I just watched the video. Nice work Hodzana. I also enjoy the sound of the mechanics doing their job, what they are supposed to do. In a funny way, isn't is awesome how a mechanical movement can keep time for ages and ages without a battery. So cool. It needs little assistance to do its job. I don't know what will need to happen to make me look at a quartz movement again, despite the fact that my family was involved in the synthetic quartz business and we used to sell to citizen for their watches...ahahahaha

If I ever get another quartz watch, it will be one of three: a replacement for the cheap digital watch I wear at the gym to time set breaks; a really good digital watch, like a Pathfinder, for purely practical purposes; or a certified, thermo-compensated quarts, like an SQ, just so I could know my watch was killer accurate. (Having said that, the Pathfinders are atomic, so they'd likely outdo an SQ in terms of accuracy anyway.) But for a "real" watch, I wouldn't ever go with anything other than mechanical again.
