In effect it messes the regulator. Not a big job to sort you just need to de magnetize it (pass it through an electromagnetic coil it takes a very short time and therefore should cost very little).

Actually in my fathers garage there is one looks like summit from the 50's because it is.....

Yeah it's a 3 second fix.

There are a lot of parts of a watch that can become magnetized, but the problem is usually when the hairspring is magnetized. The hairspring is a coil and when it becomes magnetized the coil tends to 'stick' to the part of the spring next to it which dramatically shortens the length of the hairspring. That in turn has the effect of dramatically increasing the frequency of the movement and hence the watch will run extremely fast.
