Hey everyone - I am new to this topic board and am happy to be here! My everyday watch is a Breitling Bentley 6.75 and I want to know how to clean it myself. I know I sound very cheap here (ok... thrifty) but I am sure that what I'm paying my jeweler $$$$ for I can do myself. I read on the internet to use dish soap and water and a soft toothbrush - is this advice correct?? Thanks everyone for your advice!

Cape Cod clothes work great for the polished portions, not so good on the brushed parts or crystal so keep away from those parts. Tooth brush will probably be best instrument to clean the bezel. There will be more suggestions by many members soon I'm sure. If you do a search for Cape Cod on this site you will get many many hits. Good luck.

i had the similar question, since i am a recent owner of a navi world After reading much, i find that even cape cods make scratches on the watch, and because we will get the watch service every 3~4 years, it's best to jus wear it daily and forget about getting it scaratched i honestly wouldn't try to put soap or any other chemical clothes to clean my watch, i'll jus leave it as it is... when i get the service done the watch come back brand new look anyways..

Cape cods are not cleaning cloths, they are polishing cloths. For cleaning then diluted dish soap and a soft toothbrush is fine. Some people also use diluted simple green.

I friend staying in a hotel with his uncle took his Rolex off and left it on his bedside table to take a shower. Uncle left to go to breakfast not closing the room door properly - outcome = Rolex stolen.

Any thoughts on the wisdom of using a quick spritz of eyeglass lens cleaner and a lens cloth to clean up spots and fingerprints? The cleaner is designed to be used on optical quality lenses with all kinds of coatings, so it's pretty mild. Occasionally, I will also use the cleaner in tandem with a soft toothbrush, to help get out grime in the crevices. I've been doing this for years on all my watches without seeing any noticeable problems, but I'm still curious to know what people think.

There's no problem at all using a watch for what it was designed for. BUT exposing the gaskets to chemicals like chlorine in a pool, and high temperatures (such as in a sauna) WILL shorten the lives of those gaskets. It's just a fact. Now as long you are aware that they will need changing more regularly, then there's no problem. However if you don't change them regularly at services then there is a much higher likelihood of a failure. But like I say - with regular maintenance, a watch can and should be used for what it's designed for.
