Post subject:  When is it worth buying a used watch

I'm sure many of you have been in the situation that I am in now...

I'm looking to purchase a NEW Navi World sometime in the next upcoming months. I would like to purchase new for a few reasons.
1) ITS NEW
2) I can afford to buy new
3) Warranty
4) Wouldn't need to service for 5 years
5) I do not see myself selling this watch since it is a classic and I will always love it!
- etc.... I'm sure I can think of more but i'll just leave it at that.

So if you were in my situation and a few people in the last couple months said they would be willing to sell for (say) $3500 - 4000 range. Would it really be worth it? I would be able to buy new for 4200 on croc/deployment. I know I know taxes bla bla bla. But what do you think?

I have be approached by multiple people offering me their (MINT)NW's but I'm trying to thinkif it really is worth the "savings" of all $600-800. I know that it may be worth it in the short run but what about the long run? I'm really not the type to buy sell buy sell buy sell. Thats just not my style. I love what I buy and buy what I love and like to really hold on to things for a little bit.

If this is something I will not be trading in or selling for a very long time I should just pick it up new...right?!

Also, What is a good price for a 2 year old NW in great condition?I have seen some barley sell for 3100 on here a few months back. But what is fare for one 2 years old on a croc?

Been thinking about this for a little bit.

For around the price you would buy a new w/ croc strap you could get a used but like new w/ ss bracelet. In my opinion I would go with a used w/ ss, but if you prefer the croc strap I'd go with new. New is always better and if you can afford it go for it. Most AD's I've been to lately are giving crazy discounts on all watches too.

Used is good if you don't think you're going to keep the watch forever, but every watch I've owned I always say I'm going to keep it but I never do. New or used either way you won't lose much money if you do decide to sell later on.

Same as a car in my opinion. I havn't purchased a used car in 15 years and have had 5 new since then. Go with new if affordable.

If the watch is from a AD and in mint condition save the money. You will get some type of warranty with it. My last used watch from tourneau came with I believe a one year warranty. The only thing i didn't get was the original box and paper work. This is just my opinion. I would stay away from the internet or people you don't know unless you really know your watches. I know someone who purchased a Bentley that was made in "Swilzerland"

New sounds good to me! I have bought both new and used, had good luck with the used. But the used I bought were models no longer manufactured and were 'special' pieces to me.

If I knew what I wanted like you say you do, I personally would pay several hundred (for NaviWorld) more for a brand new piece, complete paperwork, 2 year warranty, etc.

With that said, nothing wrong with buying used. Some people aren't as picky in having all the paperwork and the buyer just has to do a little more 'homework' on the seller.

Sounds like you have some time before you purchase so it doesn't hurt to explore the used options.

That's what I'm thinking. If I have to spend the extra 500 bucks to have a good piece of mind then I'll do it!

A few people that are trying to sell me are on BSource. Others via Ebay and stuff. I think I do know my B's rather well however, I still do not know how many people had it before that person too ya know?

I think I'll be waiting for the new one!
:D

You should be able to avoid taxes if you buy the watch new from an AD in a different state and have them ship it to you. That is what I did with my 1461 but obviously it wasn't new.

I buy both new and used depending. Back in late May I sold my Navi World, black dial on brown crock. The production date was the 15th week of 2010. It was literally a brand new watch, and at the time I only asked and got $3300 for it.

I think if you can find an excellent deal on used, why not. If not, new is new.

Agreed. I think 3300 is a very respectable price for a used Navi. But what some people are try to offer I think is a bit ridiculous. A Navi World on a croc 3300 is the max I would go and probably even have to take a moment to really think about that! People need to take in consideration what the price people can get it for BRAND NEW! The way I look at it... what ever they offer on anything 2 years or older, take AN EXTRA $500 off for the service that will be coming up. Even though it may look flawless on the outside, that means nothing compared to what I think i really think about the inside(which is the important stuff lol)!

Thanks for the info!

I'm still kicking my self for not pulling the trigger on a MINT World that I saw for 2800 a few months back on Ebay. The guy was asking 3100 and told me 2800(on black croc/deployment) was his bottom line. I had to put it on the back burner for a moment.....then it was gone the next day :(
:guns: I spoke to the guy on the phone and everything....TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE I GUESS.

I'll willingly buy used if that's what I need to do to get the watch, but given a choice I'll always buy new for peace of mind. I never sell so the cost / percentage cost recovered on sale discussion doesn't factor in for me.

If the money is not an issue, then why would you not buy new? That is the ONLY reason to purchase a used watch (unless it is something that is no longer available new).

i use the car analogy as well. as soon as you leave the store, it depreciates immediately. for me, i'd let else someone take that hit and i'll come along a year or 2 later and buy it.

but of course, there is a bit of risk to it. could be no warranty. might be missing papers/box or have had problems in the past. if you buy a used watch with no warranty and it dies the next day you can't get mad. you rolled the dice. internet pictures can only reveal so much. i have had used pieces that looked flawless in pictures, but in person they were less than what i was expecting. And yes, that feeling sucks. Could also be a FAKE, but you can general weed those out pretty easily . Just post in the replica forum and have the experts tell you :).

oh and a few months back i bought a super mint 2006 navi world on leather deployment for $2800 and a brand new bracelet from aw for 875 so $3675 total. probably could have did a bit better, but at least the bracelet was brand new...

Good luck

I would pay the extra money to buy new just to save the time and hassle of searching for the exact watch I want and carefully researching the seller. If money ain't a thang, why go through all that? Don't deprive yourself of the brand new feeling, particularly if you plan to wear it for years.

And I know everyone knows this, but I will say it anyway: If you want to work with a local AD, they will ship to a hotel if you're on vacation to circumvent the tax. The saved tax will pay for the flights! Some of the larger, nicer hotels are used to this rule bending and constantly secure incoming packages for guests.

Post subject:  Re: When is it worth buying a used watch

It depends on the watch and the seller. If it's someone I can trust and I can save a bit, I have no problem buying used. I bought my BB from a member on here who bought it from another member on here and I couldn't be happier. I wouldn't have been able to afford a new one and this isn't a watch that I plan in selling, ever.

I personally wouldn't be too concerned over the cost of servicing if a watch is only a year or two old, especially if it's in great shape, now four or five years then I'd be a little more concerned about it. Hell you could wind up buying a "new" watch from an AD that's been sitting in the back of the store or in a warehouse in Switzerland for two years and they'd need to be serviced at roughly the same time. I'm also one to think that a watch only really needs to be service when it's not running the way it should be, not at a specific time frame. If my watch needs to be serviced after three years then I'll send it, if it lasts seven, well lucky me.
