Just had a little browse on Ebay for Breitling straps and the prices some people are charging for calf straps is unbelievable! Not sure about the rest of the world but in the UK a calf strap is about £100 plus either £20 for a pin buckle or £180 for a deployant (prices as per my latest list).

I've seen black straps from a certain US grey dealer for like £250 and that is just the strap!!

Madness!

Stef

Yeah, eBay prices for straps are silly - I've seen fakes for higher prices than AD list. Some of hte grey market sites also have inaccurate list prices which doesn't help.

Well I have a black calf deployant which ideally suits both the Chrono-Matic and also the Navitimer Calibre 01 when it arrives, I was debating about whether I really want to keep swapping it between the two all the time or whether to pick up a black calf buckle to use on one or the other. Not sure I want to get another deployant, I'm still not finding it as comfortable as a pin buckle strap!

Ha, check out some of the prices for rubber straps... Insanity. Worst eBay offender is a merchant called "AuthenticWatches"... They want $425 for the Diver Pro II strap... Which retails at AD's for $110. Nice.

What bugs me even more though is how these fools have influenced the private market. I looked for days over at WUS for a Diver Pro I or II before throwing in the towel and heading to my AD... Full retail for a new one was cheaper than anybody would take for their used ones... They were all convinced they could get $20-$50 over MSRP...

Authenticwatches' website is just plain dumb when it comes to prices of straps, but the msrp prices of watches is pretty accurate, I don't get it.

Their source for straps and bracelets is still ADs. Unlike watches, AD cost for straps is about 75%-80% of full retail. They are paying close to 100% of retail to get straps, unlike the dealer cost(sometimes LESS) to 60% they pay for watches.

Thus gray market dealers offer discounts on watches, but end up charging a full retail or more on straps to maintain profit margin.

And many ADs - all of the ones I use - sell me their straps AT dealer cost as a customer perk. If I spend $4000 on a watch/bracelet and order a strap to go with it, the strap is comped at some ADs and offered for cost at others.

I'll have to check the rubber strap at $425 - if it'a simple tang buckle strap THAT makes no sense.

Maybe in the US, but not here in Canada - 55% the same as watches. The problem is, on lower cost items the fixed cost overhead chews up a greater percentage, and of course $ margin is lower so discounts are less.

:yeahthat

Hey Sharky such a bargain!! Give me 2 for that price!! NOT!! Heck you could buy a bunch of those after market ones and throw on your watch and keep the OEM one in pristine condition for resale or special occasions when ya want to go out with the REAL one on. That is just plain crazy! :soapbox:
