Hi guys,

Great forum you got here.
I bought my first luxury watch today and it happened to be a Breitling tungsten Avenger :D :lingsrock:

It's my first automatic watch, and I have what may be a silly question to most of you guys.
But how do I set the time?

The jeweller already set it for me and it's running well, but when it stops I'd need to know how.

Basically I've heard that you're not meant to set it between the hours of 8-3.
This is the confusing bit for me, is this pm or am?

What are the consequences of doing so?

Well the absolute first thing that you need to do is.....

Read the manual!!!

Seriously, it's important, it will tell you how to avoid breaking the watch.

Now, setting the watch.

First, unscrew the crown (turn it backwards). It will pop out to position 1, this is how you wind the watch - 40 turns for a full wind. Pull it out to the first stop and you are in position 2. The running seconds hand will still be running. This is for setting the date. Do not, under any circumstances use the quick set date between 8pm and 3am indicated time. Pull the crown out again and you are in position 3 - the running seconds hand will stop. In this position you can set the time forwards or backwards. Do no, under any circumstances turn time backwards between 8pm and 3am.

When done push the crown all the way in and hold it in while screwing the crown in.

The safest way to set the watch when it stops is to turn the hands forward to after 3 and before 8 and then turn the date to the day before the current date. Then turn hands forward to get to the right date and time. This way you can be sure that you also get the am / pm correct without risking damage.

Thanks for your quick reply Roffensian.

So basically if the watch has stopped between 8 and 3, then only set the date by forwarding the time.

What was confusing to me was, what if I had to set the time for say 9pm, does that mean I shouldn't set the date?

You could forward the time until it is after 3 AM (I usually adjust it to around 6 AM) and then set the date. Once you have the correct date then you can forward the time to 9 PM (to use your example).

Thanks for that John123.

I honestly had no idea that setting the watch between 8-3 could be damaging for the watch, the AD never mentioned this to me, maybe they just thought I knew already. Nevertheless, thank god for forums eh.

So what would setting the date or putting the clock backwards between 8 - 3 do to the watch?

It's kinda like feeding a magwai after mid-night, bad things happen.

Seriously I'm not too sure other than the gears for the date wheel can get damaged.

The AD probably assumed that you would read the manual :poke:

Between 8pm and 3am the date change mechanism is partially engaged with the running train. If you try to use the quick set date, or wind time backwards when the mechanism is partially engaged then you can very easily bend or break teeth on the date change wheel.
