Post subject: | Used Steelfish 44mm - Prices/Worth? |
Hi all, This is my first post here but have been doing some browsing, mostly with the SO Steelfish series as I'm looking to pick up a used one soon. I usually don't ask about the worth/price of watches as I can usually get a good gauge from research but this one stumps me. I've been on the hunt for a 44m version (2007+) with a blue or black dial and have seen prices from $950 to $1,900. It seems like the majority sell in the $1,400-$1,600 range but I still have a hard time grasping why these used prices fluctuate so much. If anyone can let me know the general worth and what makes different ones worth more or less than others please let me know! So far all I can deduce is condition (most of which I've found are in great shape) and Pro 1 vs Pro 2 bracelet (could this really account for a $100-$300 price difference?!). Coming from the Omega world, prices are really consistent across the same models so this Steelfish is throwing me in a loop. TIA and hope to join the Breitling owner club soon! |

I would say that for a current generation on Pro II with all boxes and papers is in the $1300-1600 range. Pro I models sell for less because they are the older generation. |

What would you say a brand new SF from an ad is going for? $2200? Does that sound about right? |

I am looking to pick one up that is in the upper end of that range. My budget is pretty tight, but I'd rather sacrifice $100-$200 for one still under warranty and bought from the original owner who is a WIS/watch enthusiast and who clearly took care of it. Are the only differences between the 44m generations the pro 1 to pro 2 bracelet and the second hand tip being changed to an arrow? |

Here you just nailed your original question of why the price variance. A 6 month old model purchased new from AD is going to be upper range - 1&1/2 year left on warranty. Condition is a big factor too. Many folk with several Breitlings view their Steelfish as the everyday tool watch and some I've seen here are pretty beat up. If this is your first Breitling, you've made a great choice with the Steelfish. Just rmemebr you can get one new from a reasonable AD for about $2300. |

Hah I did answer my own questions and I didn't even know it. Thanks for your additional input, much appreciated. I offically just finished the transaction on my Steelfish and it should get shipped out tomorrow, can't wait!!! The seller bought it in mid 2009 so it has a little less than a year of warranty and comes with a nice goody bag of Breitling logo memorabilia. It has only 1 small ding and scratch on the case and was rarely worn (which I believe if you saw his collection). Some of the ones going cheap on the forums and on ebay are tempting though, but I've learned it's better to be safe than sorry. sharkman wrote: TakmaN wrote: RJRJRJ wrote: I would say that for a current generation on Pro II with all boxes and papers is in the $1300-1600 range. $1500 - $1600 should get you one in excellent condition. Just one person's opinion, but I would use caution with offerings priced much lower. |

I got one as a gift this Sunday. The receipt was for $2330 CDN out the door with Breitlings 2 year warranty, box, papers etc. In my opinion paying the extra $400-$600 is worth getting one brand new from an AD vs. used. Rocky |

Rocky I would say in most cases this is true but considering how I tend to flip watches, the resale loss is killer. My goal is to keep this beauty for many years though, there's just no other watch like it. Also, the one I purchased is from a WIS with an impressive collection and from the pictures I received, it looks to be in mint condition with the exception of one small ding which will probably be joined by a few others once on my wrist for a little while. It also just under a year of warranty remaining so I have comfort and confidence with that. In these types of cases, I feel buying used vs. new holds more value but then again, to each his/her own. However, ebay watch purchases have let me down pretty significantly and I have learned to stray away from there for bigger watch purchases. Thanks for your help everyone, can't wait to sport mine! |
