Post subject:  New To here & a New Breitling owner - Chronomat Evo (MoP)

I've been looking for a quality watch for the past six months, and my search has gone from Omega, to, Breitling to IWC, to Rolex etc etc. My budget was around £3000/$4600. I pass an AD every day on my way to work and I kept trying on Superoceans, Navitmers and Chronomats and one never really grabbed me and always thought that i'd end up with something else. It was either the colour, the strap etc.

But then today, as I passed the window, a new Chronomat Evolution with a Mother Of Pearl face jumped out at me and couldnt stop staring at it. I didn't even look at the price and tried it on. Now in the UK at the AD, he stated that it retailed at £4810/$7461 and that for the weekend, it was on sale at £2400/$3700. That was it. Had to have it. I looked into it and it was true about the price.

So now, i am Breitling owner and am loving it.

But is there any reason why this Breitling was so heavily discounted. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it and it was bought through a reputable store. Are Chronomats the lower end of the range, or is the price inflated, or is it because I was lucky. I dont care I love it but would welcome your comments

My knowledge is limited, but I feel that the chronomat is almost a staple line of Lings, and I think the quality is excellent.
I have no idea about the price, but I would venture to guess that prices were just inflated, and the dealer had wiggle room because of that to lower the price to get an end of the week sale.

Further more you better post pics!
I really want to see your watch..

Congrats,
Jake.

I have seen the Chronomat Evo MoP at an AD for if I remember correctly about $5500. Something right in there. I'm pretty sure it would also depend on the strap it came with.

Congrats on your watch regardless. Even if the $7641 he quoted you was well outta town, the price you paid was more then fair in my books. Enjoy!!!

Regretfully, I think prices in the UK are inflated anyway, and agree that the price paid is reasonable for the quality of the watch. In that event, do people source their lings from abroad to get better deals?

Will post pictures later (when I can find the camera!!!)

Simply put, it's because Breitling allow their AD's to do it. Compare this to Rolex and Panerai for example : they restrict discounting and hence the watches used values are much higher.

The reason behind those two brands decision to restrict discounting is different though. Rolex is perceived the world over by the generally public (incorrectly I might add) as being the absolute top when it comes to watchmaking, so that means that people will pay full retail to own one. Rolex maintain this mystique by not discounting much.

On the other hand Panerai have worked long and hard to build an exclusive reputation built on making everything they make in limited numbers. I remember reading an analogy once that Panerai is like a nightclub that could hold 1000 people but with only 10 people allowed inside at a time, but with a queue around the block! This exclusivity perception means people will pay a premium and as a result Panerai don't encourage discounting.

Breitling on the other hand have less brnad recognition that Rolex, and doesn't have the exclusivity appeal of Panerai. Obviously they could increase the perception of exclusivity by not allow AD's to discount but unfortunately Breitling seem to have no incentive to do so.
