Post subject:  Am I asking for the impossible? Need help!

Hi all,

I've only just started researching this, and I'm thinking I might just have to come up with another idea, but if anyone can give me some advice that would be great!

I want to get my husband a 1997 Breitling for our tenth wedding anniversary. I had decided on the Aviastar because I think he would like the look of that one the best and also he is more into aviation than oceanics or whatever else these watches represent. I'm starting to realize that these are quite rare? My budget isn't that huge. I was thinking of spending less than $1,500. Am I dreaming? I'm out of my league here! Someone help me!

I don't think $1500 for a used Aviastar is totally unreasonable, but you're likely to see it for a few hundred more than that I think at least. They are not the most common watches... finding a 1997 model specifically would be more difficult and I assume has something to do with the year you were married? They do pop up every couple of weeks on Ebay and sometimes can be picked up there for close to what you are hoping to pay... All I can say is keep looking. You might want to try posting in the "WTB" threads on other forums as well.

If you can't find one and want to get your husband a different type of Aviation watch then you might want to consider something like a Navitimer or Chronomat, which are both more popular.

I have to say (and I feel sure acceldebt will agree here) that this is a REAL ling....

I'm almost tempted myself

I know, $2,900 is quite hefty!

Sportback,

Yeah I think that thing is pretty cool looking but it's a little small at 41.5 MM. If you put that one on now after wearing the Bentley you would see what I mean. By the way have you gone back and put on one of those 1/2 Lings since the Bentley purchase ? If so what was the reaction ?

Hey acceldebt

As it so happens, I wore my Chronomat today for the first time since getting the Bentley - didn't seem odd, just a bit lighter! I have to say I like wearing both, even if the sheer good looks of the Bentley (IMHO) make me want to wear it more - the fact that I was moving office today was what made me wear the Evo "just in case" I crushed my wrist carrying furniture

I can see I'm going to have to get new slaves...at least that way I can wear what I want without the fear of bashing it!!

Sportback,

Those Chronmat Evolutions are pretty substantial Lings. I have an old 2 tone 39 MM Chronomat and now that thing looks like a little wafer to me. I bang up the clasp and the underside of the bracelet with this Bentley myself. It will be ready for a polish job soon and I've only had it less than 2 months.

You're right you know - it seems odd that the stainless steel of the clasp, with will obviously grate against anything you rest your wrist on, isn't harder or less prone to micro-scratches. I was surprised at how quickly the titanium clasp on my Chrono Avenger (my other 'almost full' ling) started to scratch and I was always under the impression that titanium was pretty tough stuff.

Of course, this is obviously the moment to go out and hunt a few crocs to skin and make a nice new covering for your desk...and while you're at it, you can make me one too

Sportback,

Actually we really do have an abundance of Alligators down here now. When I first moved here 24 years ago they were becoming scarce and there was no Gator hunting. Now we have too many of them and the local Game Wardens promote getting licensed and hunting them. If you want a Gator desk take a look at the link below, this guy has his own Gator farm and he makes a great many luxury items out of Gator hides. After you get to the site click on the link at the bottom that says "Executive Furniture" He's got a variety of Gator desks for your perusal

LOL what a novelty idea a Croc covered desk to protect your Breitling from scratches.
