Post subject: | First Time Breitling Purchase |
Hello all, very new to the Source. This has been a great resource of information! I was just introduced to Breitling by a few co-workers recently and was immediately mesmerized by the timepieces. I am not a watch person. I haven’t worn a watch since I was a kid (I'm 31 now), but there is something about these timepieces that are so engaging. I finally made the decision that I would make the purchase, so I went to an AD yesterday. The Blackbird caught my eye first and it felt great on my wrist, as did the Avanger Skyland. It wasn't until then that I truly understood what people are talking about when they say, "A watch speaks to you”. At this point I am leaning towards the AS, because I really love the face and the raised “stenciled” numbers. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s less expensive either. Any advice? Thanks, Mike |

I tried both of those models on. I considered things like size, readability, the bracelet, the date window, cost to service the movement, the dial layout, dressiness, and the option of switching to a leather or rubber strap. In fact, I wanted to like the Blackbird more because you don't see too many of them around. But in the end I left with the black-dial Skyland. It won out, but I never really kept a scorecard -- it just "spoke" to me. It's super-easy to read at a glance, due to the bright white stencil numbers and the black subdials. Also it didn't look as dressy as the Blackbird (although it IS very shiny), and I just don't wear any kind of dressy clothing. For the summer, the Skyland on the Ocean Racer should be perfect for me. For your first watch, either would be fantastic. I definitely recommend trying them on in the store and keeping them on for a bit. Get to know them as best you can, and one will probably jump out at you. There's no wrong choice. I doubt you'll look longingly at either with the other on your wrist. Good luck, and enjoy your search. |

Welcome to the forum. If you have the bucks, get both. They are both fantastic and you wouldn't be the first one on this forum who bought two Lings in one day. ![]() |

I have to admit the Blackbird was my first choice, until the Skyland came along. I wanted something unique, and the Blackbird filled the bill, but the Skyland really did speak to me more than the Blackbird. While I was deciding, I saw a Blacksteel in the window at my AD, so that clinched it for me. Even that is also less than a Blackbird. Had I not found the Blacksteel, I would still have got a Skyland, mine would likely have been with black dial and ocean racer strap. Any combo you get on the Skyland looks amazing, though. Cheers, Carl |

Sorry, I forgot to welcome you to the forum! If I still feel like a kid at 58 when I get a new Breitling, you are still a kid at 31 as well! At one time, I was fortunate enough to afford a few beautiful automobiles. The thrill of getting a new vehicle was indescribable, now the thrill of getting a new Breitling is equally so! The other plus factor is, that they will hold their value better! My first Breitling was a Colt, purchased in the early 90s. I paid just over $600.00 for a quartz Colt. In 1997, I was able to trade it at my AD for a new SuperOcean Automatic, and I got a credit of $900.00 toward the new one! Cheers, Carl |

Hi There, Great idea to get a new Breitling !! The only advice I would have is if this is going to be your everyday watch I would buy a diving watch because they are robust, you just can’t kill them. My first good watch was a Rolex Oyster 2 tone with black face and I wear it from the Sauna to the pool, touch footy, golf, skiing, travelling etc etc you just can’t break them. My dress watch is a Navitimer rose gold, I have a temporary Breitling rubber strap whilst I wait for the croc strap. (Its rubber Not PLASTIC as some mean person said!!! ![]() ![]() Happy hunting !!! and don’t forget to post some pics when you decide. Regards ![]() |

Thanks to all for your input! I went back to the AD again today and have made up my mind. The Avenger Skyland with the black dial and bracelet is going to be the one. I saw the picture of Ross's AS with the Ocean Racer strap, wow! No doubt, I will have to get the Ocean Racer strap too! http://breitlingsource.com/phpBB2/viewt ... er+skyland bnewbie...Not quite to the point were I buy two lings in one day yet, but hey, I'm young. Certainly something to strive for ![]() I'm going to pick it up on Tuesday! I'll post some pics when I get it. Mike |

Well then, Congratulations. . . . The Avenger Skyland is a great looking piece! The bracelet will only make it even better for you! After seeing the pics of Ross's AS, I think I might just have to check em out! I'm not quite at the point where I would purchase two LINGs in one day yet (while I have purchased two LINGs in 3 weeks), I think I'm ok with that track record for now. Even though the Avenger would would be a great buy!!! --Mark |
