A couple months ago:
Coming home from the bar, my girlfriend and I stopped at Steak 'N Shake. Some lonely guy there complimented me on my watch, then started chattering about all manner of trivia.

Most recently:
I posted up a couple pictures of my watch on a non-watch website. A friend there is thinking if getting the same camera I have. A third party commented on the picture, saying she likes my watch.

I was surprised at a lack of a comment I got from my folks on my most recent trip home.I figured I would have to play it down significantly save them giving me the save more money speech.

Low and behold a whole holiday weekend wearing a 46mm black as night behemoth and not one word.

It's threads like this one that really drive home the point that at most 1% of society notices what you're wearing. That's why I'm a firm believer you should wear what you like no matter how big, small, or fugly it may be.

I recently met up with a friend from college for dinner in Chicago. He and I always chatted about watches before class, while studying, while having drinks, etc... We make it a habit to check in on which new watches the other has picked up. He was very complimentary of my latest and most significant addition to my collection - my Breitling. He was impressed and certainly happy for me to have graduated to "time piece" status. ;-)

I'd agree with the others in that there is almost never a sincere compliment paid about a watch you're wearing and that, ultimately the watch is only for you. There are instances, however, when you know the piece is appreciated fully.

This is so true. Those who know me know of my watchaholism and notice a new watch. Out of the rest of the world I've received 3 comments - (1) nice watch from a court security guard - Rolex, (2) like above, "Wow is that an Invicta??" (grrrr), and (3) "It's that Big-Ass watch!"

Evidently security guards at metal detectors are the most complimentary and rude.

Swimming around at the Encore in Vegas, a cute but not hot girl says "that's a great effing watch".......My response to her was so ridiculous, I can't even bring myself to post it out of context.....

Absolutely. As I've said time and again, I buy watches for me and me alone : what other people think is of no consequence to me at all.

I know this thread is about receiving unsolicited complements/comments from people which is very different to buying a watch purely to get complements, but I always think it's a really shame when people ask questions like, "What Breitling will get me the most attention?". I for one wouldn't want to pay several thousand for a watch if the only reason was to use it as symbol of success to garner complements from people.

In the last three weeks I've received compliments on my SA Blacksteel, and my CA. Both from military pilots that I work with. :lingsrock:

I wouldn't of been able to compliment you on the Blacksteel , I would be too busy foaming at the mouth looking at that awesome watch.

I had the good fortune of having my SA on when I took my car to Car-X for an oil change. The service advisor immediately said, "nice watch!" rather enthusiastically. Turns out he is a watch-nut and new a little about Breitling, Omega, and Tag, (which he had on) and we had a nice little conversation.
I left the car and came back a few hours later to pick it up. Across the bill was written "complimentary" with $0 due. There was also a business card stapled to it for another "free oil change."
