I've been trying to make a decision on what's next, and am looking for some input from owners of both the previous SO and the new model.

Personally, I really like the design of the case, the gear-style bezel, the yellow inner chapter ring, and the ocean racer strap on the new 2010. Plus, I've not had a virgin Breitling before - mine are both second-owner situations.

But, for essentially the same price, I could pick up a secondhand prior-generation Superocean (not the Heritage, I don't much care for the dial on that one) on a bracelet - another fabulous watch.

Is there anyone out there who has both and can offer a comparison on value, bang-for-the-buck, looks, feel, etc? My ADs are both fairly far from home and I'd like to get an idea what to look for before making the trip. How does the 42mm wear on the new model? Most of my most-loved watches are 44mm and I have a 7.75" wrist - will the 42mm case feel weird?

Thanks all in advance!

Only a handful of New Wave Superoceans are in the ADs. Both of the Phoenix ones have just 1 - the red/plum. They are supposed to hit stores in mass end of June/mid-July. Retail cost is $2950. I do believe RJRJ on this site has acquired one - check with him

I really love the look of the new SuperOceans and was ready to run out and see one - but I'm not too thrilled with a 42mm - my BlackBird is 44mm and I wouldn't want to go smaller than that. It seems like an odd size for a dive watch.

IMO, it should have been 44-46mm minimum. :?

That was sort of what I thought - 42mm sounds small. 44 seems to be the sweet spot for my wrist. I know there were some older SO's and the Heritage which you could get in larger diameter cases.

I have the new one and have been very happy with it so far. Its the same size as the old one, so there are no real surprises there, even though it may wear a tad bit larger because of the black bezel (especially if you get it with the black chapter ring). I also prefer the 44mm spot, but im getting used to the smaller size (keep in mind that my wrist is about an inch smaller than yours). I think trying one on yourself is the only solution here. If thats not an option, you may want to try on a different 42mm watch just to see. While it certainly wears nicely, you definitely wont be confusing it for a 44mm.

The rubber with deployant is about the same price as the bracelet model, but the new model carries about a $200 price increase over the last one. A used, previous generation model will probably be $600-700 less than a new 2010.

You mention the 'gear style bezel,' on the 2010. Its actually the same 120 click style bezel, independent of the crystal, as most other B's. The only difference is that it has a rubber insert instead of bare steel. Its even got 6 tiny screws holding it on in a similar fashion to the others.

Sounds cool! Sounds like you're enjoying it. I wonder if it will be followed up with a larger cased model.

When I said "gear-style" bezel, I was just at a loss for the word 'Sawtooth' - sorry for the confusion :)

I guess I'll just have to try one on to know. I love the looks and I really want one but if it's too small then it won't get worn, and that's not fair to anyone!
