Post subject:  Buying a pre-owned Breitling

Hi everyone,

I am new to the boards and this is my first post. I am looking to get my husband a Breitling for our anniversary, and have found these boards extremely helpful.

My question is - what do you think about buying a used Breitling? The AD that I will most likely buy from has a pre-owned watch that is exactly what I am looking for (a Bentley Motors with a blue face). It is about 2 years old. I am considering buying it because it is so much cheaper than a new one, but am worried about the purchase, the fact that it has no warranty, the fact that I will be buying something used for my husband, etc.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?? Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!
Lindsay

Hi and welcome aboard.

Loads of people (including most of us on here) have bought a used watch at some point or another, and if you buy well (from a trusted source) then you can save yourself a fortune and/or pick up something quite rare that you might've missed when it first came out.

The lack of warranty may be an issue, but obviously only if something goes wrong! It's also worth noting that a service at Breitling can restore a used watch, both cosmetically and mechanically, practically back to brand new condition.

I guess a lot will depend on your husbands opinions about used goods......... and how much cash you'll be saving!

It might also be worth speaking to George at Govberg (details on here in a few places) just to see if you can get a brand new one for almost used prices.

Hi. My advice was to only buy in a ABD but you are thinking about doing that any way. I recently purchased a second hand breitling and was able to get a two year warranty from the shop I got it in, if the dealer has nothing to hide he should be able to do this also and you should be able to push him for it! As for the watch being second hand I would have no problem with that if it was for me!!!! Also if it looks like new and you are getting a bargain all the better. Hope this helps and good luck with anniversary celebrations.

Hi Lindsay
A used Breitling is often a very good buy as you dont lose ££££ just walking out of the dealers with it!
I have purchased 2 used Breitlings, and never had any problems (both from dealers) and both came with a years guarantee, so i would check with the AD regarding that.
Your husband is bloody lucky you are buying him a Breitling full stop, so if he moans about it being used, i would look for a new husband! :D

Good luck

I think it's been said. One of the gifts that I bought my wife that she treasures most is 185 years old, so there's nothing wrong with used

Buying from an AD is sensible, the downsides of used are a shorter time to service (3 - 5 years from now for a 2 year old watch) and no warranty. The advantages are obviously a substantial discount.

You know your husband better than we do, but I'm sure that he would be delighted.

I tend to look more at used pieces these days, sometimes I'm lucky and stumble across a good deal for a new piece.

One thing is for sure, I never, ever pay full RRP now

As long as the watch is mint preferably with box and papers, I can't see any issue with buying used. At least you're looking in a dealer rather getting stung for a fake on ebay

Wow! Thank you all so much for the fast and great responses!

The watch does come with papers, and the AD said he will give me a 1-year warranty.

I think I am definitely leaning towards buying it. It seems to be a really great deal to me, and the watch looks brand new.

Thanks again for all of your help! I will be sure to let you know what I decide :)

Keep in mind that with breitlingsource connections  you can get a brand new one for something like 30% off retail. I have no clue what kind of deal the AD is offering you on the used one, but keep the price of a new one in mind when determining whether or not its a good deal.

Just one more thing... push him or her!! for the best price because you can be sure he has it in for half nothing. Then make sure you get the in shop warranty extended to the 2 years.

Yes - I forgot to mention that I already called George for the price of a new one and it is substantially more than the used one.

breanach78 - thanks for the advice! I will be sure to try to get the price down even more :)

Well in that case it sounds like you've found a GREAT deal on that used one!

I would pounce on that deal in a heartbeat if I were you and that was the watch I liked and wanted. Don't be concerned one bit about the fact it is used. I'm sure he'll be very happy...I know I would!

I totally Agree! Actually All Of My Current Breitlings Have Come Pre-Owned From An Authorized Dealer. I have Had Issues With Both My 1461/52 (the day function was not working properly) And The 50th Anniversay (power reserve issues) but on both occassions the warranty from the dealer took care of the issues.

Both Watches Were Returned To Breitling USA For Repair By The Authorized Dealer And Are Working Flawlessly!!!

And I Got To Admit The Only Way I Was Able To Afford A Semi-Perpetual Breitling i. e. 1461/52 - Was By Puchasing A Pre-Owned!

The 50th Anniversay I Had Missed It When It Had First Came Out So I Was Glad To Have Had The Opportunity To Get It The Second Time Around!!!

Furthermore, My Other Breitling While It Was Bought Pre-Owned As Well - According To Breitling It Was Less Than a Year Old When I Had Originally Picked It Up!!! :nana:

The Only Thing That I Kinda Regret Buying Pre-Owned Is That I Do Not Have Original Boxes Or Paper Work - However, You Can Not Wear A Box Or Paper!!!

I Would Be In Rapture If My Girlfriend Bought Me A Pre-Owned Breitling!

Well These Are Just My Rambling Thoughts - But I Say Buy Pre-Owned From An Authorized Dealer With Confidence!!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Best Regards,

Enezdez
