Post subject:  1991 Chronomat
I was recently handed down my dad's old Chronomat (1991, non-chronometer certified) and, while it keeps good time, it loses anywhere from 10 to 15 seconds a day -- is this normal for a Chronomat of this age?

I had it serviced by Liljenquist & Beckstead, where it was originally purchased, and it still loses the same amount of time a day.

Also, since it was serviced, they replaced the crown and when I screw it back in after winding it/setting the time, it makes a kind of grinding feel and sound. I figure this is normal since they would have found this out when they set the time, etc., but I'm not sure -- is this normal?

If it's that far out after servicing then get them to regulate it. It's not COSC, but it should still do better than -15.

The crown also sounds odd to me - definitely have them check it out. If the service centre is BReitling authorised then you should have a 12 month warranty on the service.

Also:

I'm trying to decide between an Omega Seamaster PLanet Ocean one of the Breitling Super Oceans -- which Breitling would be best, and would it be better of the PO?

There will be some resistance on the crown because it's spring loaded, but when you screw it down then it should just feel like you are screwing a nut onto a screw thread - certainly not grinding as you describe.

In terms of a SuperOcean or Planet Ocean - that's personal choice - try them all and get the one that 'speaks' to you.

When you screw it down you may actually be winding it at the same time. This resistance may feel a little bit like it's grinding..

As Roff said.. 15 sec per day is not good. Should not be that big of a deal to regulate it.

How about a picture? I love the old Chronomats! Ok... Well there not really the OLD ones more like modern old ones.

Yo:

I timed it for another 24 hours and the Beast only lost 2 seconds! I guess it just hadn't settled in yet.

I'll throw a photo up tomorrow when I'm back at my homestead -- it's two tone with a green dial and gold subdials, and it's absolutely gorgeous.

Couldn't get the photo up -- I guess I don't have permission to upload photos -- not that worried about that though....

I'd like to get a diamond bezel for my Chronomat, though -- anyone know how to go about this?

Or, since it's cheaper, does anyone know where I could get a Baguette Diamond Pearl Dial that will fit a 1991 Chronomat?

I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out here.

Not sure that you are going to have much luck with a watch this old. It might be worth asking Breitling directly, I doubt that they will agree to the bezel, but you might have some joy with the dial change.
