Alas, after mere months of ownership it appears I will have to send my Cockpit in for a check-up. It was keeping time within COSC for a while, but just a few days ago I noticed that the watch was gaining 2-3 minutes per day. I brought my watch into an AD here in Chicago and it was sent away for the next 2-6 weeks. ![]() My question is, did I make the right choice? 2-3 minutes a day is obviously out of COSC spec, but not fast enough to be magnetized. Any other possibilities? The watch is behaving very normally otherwise. On the positive side, I took the opportunity to look at a few other models. I looked at an Omega Planet Ocean, IWC Classic Pilot Chrono, and the Navitimer World. The PO bracelet seemed quite cheap actually and I, in general wasn't impressed. It didn't help that the salesperson gave an abysmal explanation of the coaxial movement. I love the Navitimer World (as I may mention on these boards daily) so I won't elaborate any further. I was blown away by the IWC. It may very well be the next big purchase. Any thoughts? Also, in the interim I was thinking of getting a Movado Horwitt with date "complication". Was pretty fantastic looking, although the Movado is a bit "played out" in my opinion. Any thoughts on this? |

There was a member on here a few weeks ago who had a watch that was diagnosed as magnetised and was only running a few minutes a day fast - that was laptop speakers I believe. I agree that it doesn't seem enough to be a magnetism problem, but anything is possible, and perhaps the likeliest 'sudden' issue. These things have solid balances so it's not a balance screw although there could be a regulator or hairspring issue elsewhere. In terms of alternative watches - IWC make someincredible pieces, and while the PO is a nice watch it wouldn't be 'different' enough for me. Movado - well I'm a watch snob, so not for me. |

Well, got my baby back today! Surprisingly, the repair was described as a complete overhaul. My watch was made in the 50th week of 2007 and was purchased around the first of 2010. Does all that sitting around mean the watch needed a complete overhaul of the movement? Seems odd that would be the case. Is it that "complete overhaul" is the default for when a watch is sent in for service because of timekeeping issues? |

The biggest problem with watches sitting around is that the oil can move from where it's needed - at the friction points, and if there was evidence of wear on an arbor pivot then an overhaul would be the sensible solution. Similarly, if there was no evidence of the cause of the problem then it's not much more effort to inspect, clean and oil all of the parts to be sure that the problem is addressed. |
