Hi, I am considering getting a chronomat but I am worried about the highly polished finish.
Just how easily does the highly polished finish pick up scratches? I see alot of older breitlings that look very scratched and dated, does anyone have any pictures of older polished watches that are still in decent condition?

From what i've read, Cape Cod polishing cloths are good for polishing the watches up, but if you need more than that, check this out...

Cape Cod or Sunshine cloths do great and if you get a full service from Breitling after 5 - 7 years they will repolish it and make it look like new.

Polished finishes can be very easy to maintain if you use Cape Cods (or similar). In some ways they can be easier to maintain than brushed finishes IMO. (BTW the absolute worst ones to maintain, apart from the impossible PVD/DLC, is bead-blasted finished! If you hate scratches then avoid these like the plague!).

So much depends on how you wear your watches, and at the end of the day, both polished and brushed finished watches pick up scratches : it all depends on how noticeable you think the scratches are. I'm fairly careful with my watches, and I can safely say that I've not noticed any difference in terms of propensity to pick up scratches between polished or brushed.... and if I do get them I break out the Cods for polished finishes, and the scotchbrite for brushed finishes.

Cape Cod is slightly more aggressive than Sunshine, although neither are particularly aggressive. However Cape Cod smell strongly of vanilla which is off putting to some.

And I always have to wash my hands off after using Cape Cod cloths. Sunshine cloths are less messy.

Am I correct in saying that when using the Cape Cod cloth extreme care should be taken not to venture onto the Sapphire Crystal as the polish on the CC cloth would remove the AR?

Does the same go for using the Sunshine cloth?

You should try to avoid the crystal with the cape cod polish, but realistically, some overspray isnt going to harm anything unless you start polishing the crystal with the cloth. I would be more careful with the sunshines since they seem are dry and have a fine powdery coating that seems like it could do some damage with or without the cloth.

Just cover the crystal with some masking tape before you start.

That's what I do. It takes a few mins to get it right to the edge, but I'd rather do that than have to fork out for a new crystal!

No. The AR coating is actually very tough : it's just not as tough as sapphire, hence why it can get scratched if you're not careful or just unlucky.
