Hi Guys -

I am new to the Ling world, and I am doing a lot of research into the watches.

There are some really nice ones out there but I can't figure out which one I want yet.
I have spent so much time at a local dealer that the lady threw me out because I didn't buy one that day! :D

The problem I am having is examining a working Breitling and understanding all the wonderful qualities of the watch.

And this leads me to ask the "dumb" questions.

All features are for a men's watch.
1) Which current watches are automatic?
2) Which automatic watches have a large second hand that truly sweeps.

I have been looking over the information and the pictures on this site and the Breitling site, but I can't tell which watches have a large second hand vs. a sweep hand that is used for the stop watch.

Maybe there are none that fit that category, but I am here to learn and truly appreciate the Breitling name.

Any and all info is appreciated.
Thanks,

Doug

I am also new to Breitling, I suggest that you spend some time going through the Models section listed on the Source home page. That will let you see which are automatic.....there are a lot of them.

Not sure about the second hand, I assume that all automatics have a large sweep hand, but I am not sure.

good luck on the hunt.

Welcome aboard.
Most of the Breitling line is Auto.
All non-chrono models have large second hand.
On the chrono models large second hand is for the chrono function, but you can leave the chrono running and it will sweep.

Not all automatics have large sweeping seconds - in chronos the running seconds is in a sub dial, as bnewbie says the large second hand is for the chrono seconds.

No automatic 'truly sweeps', they all movce in steps, but automatics give the impression of sweeping because they move so frequently as opposed to quartz watches which only move once per second.

In terms of current Breitlings that meet your criteria (I'll disagree slightly with bnewbie - SOH38 is the exception):

Cockpit
Avenger Seawolf
Colt Automatic II
Colt GMT+
SuperOcean
SuperOcean Heritage 46
SuperOcean Steelfish

My suggestion send jnelson(Justin) a pm and use that AD. Sounds like the dealer you went into doesnt deserve your business. If they cant "be bothered" by you taking you time to get acquainted with the brand and look for as long as you need to then I wouldnt give them a cent of my money.

Gentlemen -

Thank you very much for all your help in trying to figure out which watch I want to go with.

With the closest AD that I have been visiting, it was Royal Maui in Escondido, CA.

The lady there was so hoping that I was going to buy a watch on that particular day.
She was trying everything to get me to buy.
1) She told me about the store's layaway plan
2) She told me about the store's credit card plan. In that, if I pay it off before the end of the year, I wouldn't have to pay interest on it.
3) She told me that she didn't have any of the current catalogs to let me have so I can examine them on my own time, because Breitling was requesting them back because the prices for the watches are going up $500-$1000, depending on the watch.

She was pushy, and when I didn't cave in and just buy a watch, that's when she took away from the technical details manual and basically told me to come back when I was ready to buy.

Roffensian, thank you very much for the list of watches. That helped a lot in trying to figure out which look I want, and it looks like none of them. ;-) They are all very nice, but I guess I am looking for a busier looking watch, like the Navitimer, the Montbrillant, or in the B for B series - the 6.75, or something in the Motors series.

But which one?!?! They all look good... and no guys... "Buying them all" is not an acceptable answer! :D

I will let you know once I know more!

Thanks again for everything!

Doug

Not to steer you from a Brietling but the only truly "sweeping" second hand is on the Seiko Spring Drive :

http://www.seikospringdrive.com/

"The only watch in the word to represent the true nature of time. The hands move as evenly and silently as time itself."

As the others have said, to get a large sweeping second hand you'll need to have a non-chrono movement. You could also leave the chronograph running if you need the satisfaction of of the center second hand being in motion.

Hi guys -

Ian - Thanks for the info about about the Seiko. Maybe I will check it out as a future purchase.

Breit - JNelson has already contacted me and once I figure out which one I want, I will pull the trigger.
The problem is that there are a few that look really good.
So Briet, which watch are you getting?

Share the good news.

Ciao

Doug

If you can learn something new each day, that's a good thing!

Whether it's from this forum or in life in general, learning is a good thing.

Now then, when you learn something new about a new toy... it makes learning a little more fun! ;-)

Hi Doug,

Here are a couple of photos to help you out, one is a blue dial steelfish on a blue ocean racer (you can also get it on a steel pro-II bracelet) and a silver dialed chronomat. The steelfish has the "sweeping" large seconds hand you want.

Hi Shawn -

Thanks for the pics! That's a nice design. Are both of those automatic vs quartz?

Thanks again!! (Show off!) :D
